That was the last season my late dad & myself were able to attend matches together before he became ill

Just trying to work out whether it was the 1986/87 or 1987/88 season

80 Alison/Book sacked
81 FA Cup final with Bond
83 Relegated with Benson
85 Promoted with McNeil
87 Relegated with Frizell
89 Promoted with Machin
September 89 5-1 (25 years ago next Tuesday I think)
November 89 Machin sacked for having no repartee with fans

Never a dull moment in the 80s!

87/88.

I enjoyed that season. Some great performances in the autumn.

Yes there were, weren't there.

We struggled pretty badly in our opening game against Plymouth Argyle, but I particularly remember Mel, never the most demonstrative of men, running out of the dugout quicker than Usain Bolt, and throwing his cap into the air with sheer excitement, in celebration of Imrie Varadi's injury time winner.

That season also brought us the, never to be forgotten, 10-1 victory over Huddesfield Town

Didn't skip go on to manage Bristol City for a short spell, after he & and Big Mal had left us? (1980)

Ah the 6-2 battering of Plymouth in the Full Members thingy was just after the 10-1.

From memory we scored a couple in the first few minutes and two of the other goals came within seconds of Plymouth scoring.

Tony Adcock had back to back hat tricks at Maine Road.

A season that promised much but fizzled out.......
In November we beat Huddersfield 10-1 and Plymouth 6-2 as well as knocking out 1st Division Forest and Watford in the League Cup.
Disappointing 2nd half of the season had us finishing 9th
Agreed .
Paul Stewert was are main man that season .
Had some good runs in the cups that season .
Remember we also lost 1-0 to Huddersfield that season .

Yes we got to the last 8 of the League Cup, losing to Everton at Goodison and we had 3 games against Huddersfield and 2 against Blackpool in the FA Cup - the usual 4-0 drubbing by Liverpool in the 5th round knocked us out.

I thought he had a little spell at Cardiff but couldn't find anything when googling it
