Kind off.Why do people not go to matches in midweek? Would it be the same for other sports, too?
Here in Melbourne AFL is dominant code, and traditionally been a weekend game. In fact was basically played 6 matches Saturday afternoons. When the League expanded into a national competition they started playing games Friday nights, Saturday arvo Saturday nights and Sundays. The marquee game of the round is normally a single Friday night fixture, normally at the G with 70K plus crowd.
Recently last few years (pre covid) they have experimented with Monday night games, (trying to copy NFL) but it's never really taken off, attendance wise. Now they have added Thursday nights which seems to be working.
As far s our game goes we have been in a continual mismanagement for decades and fixturing is just another idiotic example of how to disenfranchise an already confused audience.
Last night was a grand final rematch and the actual quality of play was the best so far and deserved a decent crowd, officially was 3.2k but from my guestimate was half that.
Until the game gets back to 2014-2016 type levels they should avoid midweek games at all costs.
