Not sure this counts as stealing, but after leaving the army, my first job was as a security keyholder for Woolworths. Coming up to Easter and they had a Guess the Weight of a huge, gigantic easter egg. Being the first in the store, I stuck it on the scales in the pic n mix and put my ex wife's details on the entry form.
She got it spot on funnily enough.
You have just re kindled a memory there.
In my last couple of years at school I had a job selling bingo tickets door to door.
No cold calling just regular customers.
Obviously it was pre lottery and early technology meant they were made of card with a perforated edge which was torn off to play the 3 games that were in there.
They were a different coloured card every week.
I got 10p commission for every card sold and one lady used to take loads off me and take them to work and sell them to her mates.
The canvasser used to deliver them on a Wednesday and then I would take them to the customers on a Friday evening and for about 2 hours work I was earning about £5 which was a lot of money for a school kid in the early 70’s…
Friday night in the Pub and the City matches at the weekend all paid for.
I then noticed in the bundles of tickets there were the odd one a slightly different colour and also if they had been carefully handled by the Canvasser and myself slightly protruding from the pack which had an elastic band around them.
Curiosity got the better of me and despite knowing I could be using half of my commission for the week on useless cards I gambled opened them and noticed they were the winners.
Add the fact the Canvasser was always in a rush and never counted the returns there were also less returns than I put on my commissions sheet.
I always had the answer there must have been a shortfall on delivery but it was never queried anyway.
I was suddenly earning about £12 a week which for 2 hours work on a Friday early evening, was a nice little earner.
Later I modified my scam by opening the perforated bottom and if it wasn’t a winner, putting it to one side to be included in the returns pack.
Keep the customers happy was my motto, so if they started to moan that if they didn’t have a win soon they were going to stop playing begrudgingly they usually won a couple of weeks later.
