I've heard this term being bandied about with our club for a long while now, and I'm not entirely sure how apt it is?

How many of our players that we've signed can be described as coming here purely for money? I think people forget, if you're earning £60,000 at one club, you're already ridiculously rich. So money isn't going to be a major incentive, certainly a factor, but not the sole incentive to come to a club.

I was just wondering whether the term 'mercenaries' for our players has got on anyone else's nerves?

Yes it gets on my nerves too. If a player signs for any of the sky 4 they are seen as going to improve their career etc, anyone signs for us and the press are very eager to mention their wages, as if players at the swamp earn peanuts. its all a load of shite and extremely irritating.

I'd sooner call Robbie Fowler or Steve McMinimum a mercenary than Gareth Barry... tell me those two moved for "football reasons".

It's pure jealousy mate, not worth raising an eyebrow to. Money is a big motivator in life and these players that are signing for us have got their work cut out...Tenth in the league is not an option, think of it that way.

It's bollocks.

We had more mercenaries at our club when we were skint than at any other time, Fowler, McMinimum, etc

Exactly!
To be honest, the media call our team 'Manchester City and their band of mercenaries', and I couldn't name on person who came to City for purely money reasons. Robinho is often cited as one, but we all know he just wanted out of Real, and we came knocking. If he was happy at Madrid, but we went and offered a mega contract and took, fair enough.

It's just, irritating.

I feel like although a mercenary literally means one who performs a task solely for money, that people say City employs mercenaries more in the sense of going after players who could care less about the club. Its not so much the amount of money they make, but that they don't give a flying fook about the club itself.

I agree it is irritating, but it's something we are all going to have to get used to. Unfortunately there is a lot of jealousy out there, and it's all aimed at us!!

What is wrong with going to work somewhere just for money?

We fans are a bit dumb sometimes. Player A is 'a mercenary' - no loyalty to club, whilst Player B is crap and should be sold on.

Doh!

I think anyone who shows any loyalty to any employer is a complete fool. You're out the door the minute someone else will do your job better or for less. Footballer no different.

Exactly. Unfortunately there seems to be a lot of bitter twats in the media, who like nothing better than to create a load of shit. Just gotta deal with it i'm afraid.
