Waiting for Axelrod to return...
Have seen couple other threads re Messi is great, Messi - Let's buy him!

But on a more considered actual debate, and similar to the Kaka attempt...

What do you feel it would realistically take for an actual approach to be considered worthy of consideration by Barca.

At the end of the day, they are an astute business.

I look at where were are in our current development, visions for our future, and believe the magnitude of this one signing, would achieve so much in terms of worldwide recognition and progression on and off the pitch.

We will no doubt waste a lot more money trying to find the right formula in the coming seasons.

But for me, £150m plus Robinho would at the very least kickstart a process similar to Kaka.

Allied to wages of £1m a week - £48m a year (I know this sounds ridiculous, but he earns £29m a year now, what we would make off the back of him in terms of success and new fans)

£300m is a small investment in the grander scheme of things as it would progress us five years in two minutes.

The boy is 22-years-old - an agreement with Barca to allow him to return in three to four years (when he is at his peak) would also, I believe, deliver something of a unique proposal, again worth of consideration.

Our owners dream big, admittedly, the boy is Barca to his core, adored by them, but for the mere issue of debate, certainly attainable in terms of the market level we operate at.

Clearly Kaka had the final say, but there is no such thing as bad publicity. How can it be ridiculed going after the best player on the planet.

At the very least, it will 'smoke out' other quality players who will see how high our aspirations are.

could we afford him - yes

would he want to come - probably not yet, even if we doubled/tripled his wages

he's playing at a team he loves and has no reason to leave, we might be in the champs league next year (fingers crossed) but would that be enough to persuade him to come, i doubt it. i think he'll only come if/when we're close to being one of the best sides in europe and winning most trophies domestically as well

Laporta would lose the next presidential election if he sold Messi. He wouldn't entertain any offers until the buy-out clause was reached (250m Euros?). At that point it would be down to Messi, who would say no.

250 mil to match his buy out clause, which could go up again at the end of this season?

Why wouldnt he come, after all he did see us beat his team on their own patch so he knows WE are the best team in europe, works for me

I think there's zero chance of it happening in the next few years and a small chance of it happening ever, but you never know. People say Messi will stay at Barca forever and he might do that, but who's to say in 5 years time after winning evrything multiple times that he won't want a fresh challenge and a chance to test himself in a new league? You can't say whether it will or won't happen or what his or our situation will be like in the future, so you never know, but I wouldn't bother to entertain the prospect too seriously just yet

This is only the concrete bit of info to contribute to this debate.

Lionel Messi's father/also his agent, contacted City directly last summer - the reason? -

Two agents, claiming to work for us, provided him with endorsement papers from ourselves, saying they were authorised to act for City.

His father was intrigued enough to call Cook and discover the real truth.

The documentation was old and was related to intruction from the previous board, Shinawatra.

Basically, the agents were hoping to pull a fast one and make a killing.

My own take, why did Lionel Messi's father feel the need to enquire about our intentions in the first place, that's all I will ask?

Cook left a marker down that day, that's what I will say.

Get ready for an invasion of "Likkle Cityers":

He'll never come to City etc.

Personally speaking, I can't see we would get a return from any one player worthy of the investment you discuss. The old chiche is "you'd make that in shirt sales" but I don't think that's actually true.

I wouldn't mind seeing him in the blue shirt though, I don't care about return on investment.

Can we delete this thread before all of our summers are a whirlwind of F5, power wanks and Messi compilation vids?

I reckon it would take £150-200, even possibly 250 million, to get him!
And even then i'd bet you he'd be devastated that the worlds best team and a club as prestigious as any sporting club ever (that "more than a club" stuff is right!) has let him go to a club that has trudged around 4th-7th in England - that being our best seasons for 30 years! - compared to what he has at Barca!

If he signed for City he'd go down in my estimations!

If we are commencing discussions I think could should show Messi fblokes "Tipping Point" thread from yesterday.

He'll sign then alright.

I think its way to soon even to contemplate making an offer for Messi... firstly nothing under 250m euros would even be thought about... and lets look at it this way... he came to Barca at the age 12-13... they helped him get the treatment for growing since he was extremely short... they have done everything in their book to help him and his family...

he just love the way they play football and its backuped with lots of great players like, Xavi, Iniesta, Keita, Toure, Bosques, Poyol, Alves, Ibrahimovic... all those players help Messi on the pitch to get the area he needs to work... they are all fantastic passers that help each other to perform... and he is allowed to be himself and express himself with them...

What would be the challenge for him to go to us? Another league? More money (when he already is the best paid footballer on this planet)? What exactly are we in the grand scheme of things... we haven't yet played in Champs League, we haven't yet managed to qualify for european football for ages by our own doing (not counting fair play league as qualifying by own rights as in winning a spot that makes you qualify), we haven't won anything for 34 years, we have a lot of money but so does alot of teams in russia... we are on the brink of something great but we havent achieved anything yet... that might be looked at as a challenge by some people but realistic that is still a couple of years from getting a player like Messi to even consider us...

We bang on about our history and its important for us... as we do have a history... but in modern football we are just for now only an up and coming team.. a team that might be great in a couple of years but we have no modern history of being great and winning things... we need to get things done first before we can be reckoned as a great team... for now i think we dont have that great pulling power as we wish we have... we have money and a huge fan base... but what else?

It would take close, if not the entire Buy-out clause, £220m?, to make Barca take notice (which compared to Ronaldo at Madrid, £880m, isn't that high)

Even then i'd expect Messi to reject any contract offered.

Lets hope he's best mates with Tevez, im sure i heard him say in a recent interview " I've always wanted to play with tevez and mad Zab"

Fcuk an immediate financial return, though. Success and worldwide reputation are paramount for our owners.

You've got me worried now, Dave. Are you saying that we have wasted our money and will not get a financial return on Joleon Lescott?

Lets not kid ourselves here, he wouldn't touch us with a barge pole!

I'm not a 'likkle cityer' i'm a realist, no player who is playing regular football for a side like Barca, and winning trophies with said team would leave to come to us.
We've got many years of catch up to play before this kalibre of player would join.

Thats only my opinion of course and i'd love to be proved wrong.
