Metrolink fine.

So I've just checked the statements for both our cards on the metrolink website as suggest in this thread. Both our statements are showing we started our journey at the Etihad campus and have not ended the journey. This is incorrect as we started at piccadilly Station so proves there was an issue with the hand devices that there staff were using there when we boarded.

What s strange is that mine has charged £4.60 for an uncompleted journey but my sons has charged £4.60 for an uncompleted journey and also £45 for a standard fare charge which is timed at 10mins before we actually got off the tram at the etihad.

This is a joke !!!

Refuse to pay, tell them to take you to court. As others have said if you just tap in but don't tap out you pay £4.60. The fine only applies if they catch you on the tram or leaving a station without a ticket. If somebody thought they hadn't been charged on the outward journey why would they tap out? They wouldn't. Even the most stupid employee must surely see that?

Exactly you wouldn't tap out. Issue is they've already taken the £45.00 fine payment out of his bank account and have rejected his appeal. It could be a tasty phonecall tomorrow when I ring them

Dodgy ground there I'm not sure legally they can be judge, jury and executioner and just take the money without permission.

You’ll probably get nowhere but I’d phone up your bank or credit card company and tell them there’s been an unauthorised payment taken from your card and see how far you get with that. I’ve had it before where a pub has taken money off my card that i didn’t agree to and the credit card company refunded it immediately.

This is obviously different to that. I’m no lawyer but I imagine by setting foot on a tram you legally agree to all sorts of shit by default. But unless you’ve misremembered something or left something out of your story, this just sounds like theft to me.

Their own rules say if you only tap in and not out you will pay the full fare which is £4.60. If the lad has one tap in, no matter where it was, then it should be £4.60. I'd fight this all the way on principle even if I lost and it cost me more. I'd go the the newspapers too, they love bureaucracy gone mad tales.

Yes we both tapped in with the metrolink staff hand devices and tapped out at the same terminal stand at the Etihad. I'm going to ring them tomorrow and state that this is not his issue if he has been informed by staff at the start of his journey that his card has been accepted and demand that he is refunded the fine amount minus the fare he should have paid.
I think Metrolink staff wear body cams, give the approximate time and ask to view the footage, if they cant or wont provide it ask why not. Also if a station should be CCTV, ask for footage and if this shows an exchange between you and staff why werent you prevented from boarding or advised to tap in/buy a ticket?

Problem with that is, this happened well over a month ago. Network Rail would certainly have multiple cameras down on the platforms but they will wipe them after a few weeks.

i would tell them to fuck right off.

It would be nice if they fixed the fucking ticket machines. The one at Manchester Airport wasn’t working when I got back from Spain and the app was useless, and when I changed at St Werburgh’s Road, the same thing happened there. Neither machine working. Couldn’t buy a ticket. How the fuck are we supposed to travel with tickets if we can’t buy them and the app only lets us buy weekly passes?

I just have a load of change in my pocket and tell em the machine wouldn't take it.
Plain clothed ticket inspectors would stop the old ruse.

One time they went “There’s a full ticket inspection after this stop” and about ten people got off.

With Merseyrail, when the ticket office is closed then you get asked to buy one at your destination. They let you through the barriers and you can walk off unchallenged.

Yep. I live here and still have no idea what 'zones I'm going through. I just tap the screen til it gets to a couple of quid tkt and buy that.

Anybody been fined by metrolink for supposedly not starting there journey had the fine overturned. At the west ham game we jumped on the tram at piccadilly and were met by metrolink staff who had machines in there hand and they scanned our bank cards and told us we were OK to board, at the Etihad we used the terminal devices to end the journey. 12days later my son has been fined for apparently not starting his journey. I have appealed the fine but been unsuccessful as they are still saying he never started his journey, surely this is not his problem if he was told by a metrolink employee that his card had scanned and he was free to board the tram.
If u were going to try and avoid payment why would u bloody end your journey at the terminals if u hadn't started the journey.

Absolute joke of a firm.
Yes I have just got a £45 fine last week on CL night.
I tried to buy on the platform and no ticket came out so I tapped in.
A guy on the platform checked my card and said ok.Didnt stop me, no notification of an issue.
Next day bank fraud dept contacted me, had to take morning off to go there, turns out it was this shower of shit charging me.I told my bank not to pay it and although they said they wont they did.
Rang TfGM and was told I tapped in twice!
Wrote to customer relations who told me I have to put in an appeal. To make matters worse they took another £10, no idea why.
I also said I had a train ticket for Zone 1 so how do they know I didnt get off at the next stop?
Queried it and they just sent me another cant be arsed standard response.
Told them Im not appealing to get money they should not have taken.
Is this shit show back under council control now, thought I read it was?
Im going to fight it, unbelievable that they can take money out your account with no notice at all.
If there is a few of us maybe we could do a joint effort, about time Burnham earned his money to help Manc residents?

Tap in tap out

Fight the system. Get yourself a basic second account and put money in it that is never more than the cost of the highest ticket. Mobile banking means you can easily load up there and then.

You shouldn't get bank charges that way and they'll have to chase you for the money for any charges instead.
