Michael Owen vs Alan Shearer after calling Newcastle a Small Club

A sleeping giant and a big club in certain periods in time (1930s and 1960s/70s).
But no chance were City a big club between 1981 -2011, by any stretch of the imagination.

Yes we were. Ask any clubs that played us in the lower divisions or drew us in a cup tie if we were considered a big club. We packed the place out and took thousands of fan's away to most grounds. We were their cup final.

Since 1966 we have averaged less than 20,000 in only one season and that was 1988 when we averaged 19,472.
And in that same period Newcastle have only averaged less than 20000 on 3 occasions. And we have both averaged under 30000 on 18 times (pretty much in same period when crowds were crap). Ultimately Newcastle are a huge club historically hindered by a crap location meaning WAGs wouldn’t go there so harder to get good players etc. To me the definition of a huge team is one who have fans going no matter how good or (in their case) crap they have been. It’s easy to follow a winning team. Would Utd get 75000 were it not for their history of winning things giving them worldwide visibility? Not a chance in hell

Newcastle don't share their city with the "biggest" football club in the world.

Having a big away following is hardly a requirement of being a big, elite club. One of the biggest away followings I have seen at Maine Road was Chelsea in 1984 (must have been well over 10,000 of them) and they were in the 2nd Division so not really one of the big clubs at that time.
Other sides with good away followings are
Leeds United
Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield United
Sunderland
Middlesborough
West Ham United
None of these teams can be considered big/elite teams, even though 4 of them have 40K plus capacity stadiums .
And the reason they are not big/elite sides is because they have won virtually nothing trophy wise for the past 25/30 years.
However Chelsea who 30 years ago were NOT considered an big/elite team are now considered to be a big/elite team. They still have the same stadium as 30 years ago(with a reduced capacity to due seating.) They still have a good away following.
But the main difference between Chelsea in the 80s and the current Chelsea is that they have been serial trophy winners for the past 25 years(both pre and post RA.)
It's the winning of umpteen cups and leagues that moves a club from being also rans to eliteism.
Not how many fans you take to lower division away sides.
