So the written confession from the other bloke, who I might point out looks alot like him, is to be ignored?

It is when his story doesn't match anyone elses, and he's not prepared to stand up in court.

and there lies the problem. Added to this that his trial and conviction was in another country and that he has not been found guilty by a British Court of Law.

Jack Straw has been given the right to issue a pardon by the High Court in December 2008 therefore it is his wish to keep Michael Shields in jail , rather than his duty to do so.

Jack Straw shouldn't pardon him though, that would cause a huge diplomatic incident.

No, If he was innocent then the government should consider it, but that IMO is not the case.

People are being told by his family that its a miscarraige of justice but if you read what actually happened with the witnesses who id'd him and then the lies about not knowing the other fans involved who were in the next room to his and then the lies about not being related to someone who said he witnessed Sankey do it yet he was actually "kind of a cousin". Im sorry but people need to understand that just because Jamie "laaaaaa" Carragher says he's innocent doesnt actually mean he is.

The crime was committed in Bulgaria, why exactly should a British Court of Law be relevant?

Jack Shaw has to be completely satisfied in Shield's innocence to grant a pardon. It doesn't matter if he feels there are issues, or that he's not 100% convinced in his guilt, he has to be 100% certain he's innocent. Can he be THAT certain? No, and as such he hasn't pardoned him.

Surely it's his duty to protect the British public by not releasing a convicted murderer?

Jack Straw doesn't have duty to release convicted criminals no matter how many scousers want him to.

Jack Straw said:
in order to grant a free pardon, he would have to be satisfied that Mr Shields was morally and technically innocent.

Obviously he wasn't.

Yeah that's what I meant, cheers bud.

This Michael Shields case reminds me of when I went to see Frank Skinner a few years ago.
At the time Louise Woodward was big time in the news. For those of you who don't know, she was employed as a nanny in America and was accused of killing a toddler in her care.
Frank Skinner said about the trial, which was covered on American telly, "It's like watching England away, all cheering for the result. We don't believe she's done it because she's English"

How would we feel if a Bulgarian came to Britain and nearly killed a bloke.
Not only that but lots of other Bulgarians were running pissed through the streets beating who ever they wanted to a pulp.
We found him guilty of the crime but because on compassion let him complete his sentence in Bulgaria.
If a Bulgarian minister then decided that the Bulgarian was innocent and released him I bet there would be hell to pay.
Now imagine if the poor bloke who was attacked was a scouser. Liverpool would be enraged.
We can't have these double standards.

This isn't City related but I would like to express my support for this young man that has been imprisoned for roughly 3 years for a crime that it would appear he has not committed. I hope that decent football fans of all teams would support him as not only do I believe in his innocence, a miscarriage of justice especially abroad could land anyone of us in his position.

Jack Straw should be ashamed in my view.

he doesn't exactly look innocent does he lol

and how does innocent 'look'?
