and so it came to pass..... Manchester United fell
I'm sure the older posters on here will remember the name and what a debacle that was.

Knighton... Red Knights.

I'm absolutely positive there is no connection but equally positive the outcome will be none too dissimilar.

Who remebers him running on the pitch and takimg a penalty all for it to end up with him.............

Taking over Carlisle United.... hahahah

I dont think it was a penalty, im sure he played kippy uppy from half way line towards Stretford End then belted ball into the net.

In 1989, Knighton made a takeover bid of £20 million for Manchester United. At the time, this was a record figure for a British football club and the offer was accepted by chief executive Martin Edwards.[3] Knighton promised to invest £10 million in the team's stadium, Old Trafford, as well as re-establish the club as England's top side.

Knighton appeared on the pitch at Old Trafford before a game dressed in a full Manchester United football kit to publicise the takeover. Famously, he showed off his football skills by completing a long series of skilful "keepie ups".[4] However, as Knighton's financial backers gradually pulled out, the deal eventually fell through.[5] In retrospect, the purchase could have been one of the business moves of the century;

After the Manchester United deal, Knighton went on to buy Carlisle United, based in the Cumbrian City of Carlisle in 1992. At the time, they were in the bottom division of the Football League .

-- Sat Mar 27, 2010 12:50 pm --

You are correct.

The intriguing part of it was WHY Martin Edwards was so desperate to sell,he actually came out & said he couldn't afford to keep ploughing his money into man utd,correct me if i'm wrong but don't the rags bang on about the club being self-sufficient ???
Sounds to me like a rich owner has run out of money after pouring it into a bottomless pit for years.......he then wanted rag fans to take up an option to buy shares in the club but they wouldnt so he went to the city,that was the start of what has happened now.
“We needed money to rebuild the Stretford End” said Edwards “We had to go to the city for that money. By then we had to comply with the Taylor Report to make Old Trafford an all-seater stadium. We did a rights issue, every fan had a chance to buy shares in United, most didn’t. We wanted a third of the shares to be held by small individual shareholders, a third by institutional shareholders and the rest by supporters. That was what we were aiming for, maybe even more being held by supporters, but they never took up the shares. We raised the money to build the stand. The construction was also paid for by far higher ticket prices”
Funny that innit,how many of those with Norwich scarfs on know the truth about the club they support.

the funny thing is that the red knights have probably got less money than knighton. he was a funny bloke. didn't he see a flying saucer in cumbria?? give it 'til after the world cup and ask all those daft reds you know whether they've paid their £25. ha ha ha ha ha, united are becoming a laughing stock

Knighton had already bet on himself getting a match, that turned a few people off when they found out. That was the rumour at the time.
