I think you could find many photo's and film of Wilson smoking a pipe. In particular, he went on Parky's show in the 70's and was smoking it. Whether he preferred Cuban cigars, or whether any of your other 'facts' are correct, I've no idea.
Yarwood had little competition in his day and was very, very popular in the late 70's/early 80's. Wilson was too in the 60's and 70's, in or out of his Gannex, for a while.

You’ve missed the point. The pipe was a prop for public occasions as it made him look more like a man of the people. Never touched it away from the cameras.

Alluded to in Wiki where it states that the pipe, the gannex etc were his political persona. Mentioned in the many books about him. Our working class hero came from a very well to do middle class family and was, of course, an Oxford Don.
