Milner/England

I was sat with a couple of typical England fans last night who were slagging Milner off and calling for Walcott and Carroll to come on. They simply don't understand that apart from Messi, players don't beat 3-4 men and smash it into the net everytime they get the ball anymore. I've argued about Gaz Baz until I'm blue in the face but they always bring up the Germany game and discard the rest of what he does. It's a hopeless cause I'm afraid.

unless youre a villa or city fan, gaz will always be remembered for being outpaced by mesut ozil, which is ridiculous

Milner's in the team because the manager wants to play an attacking full back. The full back is a defensive liability, therefore, a decent midfielder has to be played out of position in order to cover for him.
You could have picked a fit full back who also loves to get forward, is a menace to the opposition at set pieces (our teams only strong point to datein the tournament), is as fast as anything, and can defend.
Funnily enough, that sounds a bit like Micah Richards - who can also double up as a central defender.
Just think, we could have picked him and then played either Milner, or, your choice of right sided attacker in his place. But, you need a decent manager to see these things don't you!
Let me know when the vacancy comes up again!

I can see why Milner is in the team, because the wrong player is at right back (IMO).

Personally, I would drop Milner v Italy and go with Walcott.

On another note. I don't think Milner is good enough to be playing week in, week out in a title winning side.

He was class for us when we were top half, that's about his level (IMO).

top half? you have a good memory.

He hasnt been great so far this tournament but the abuse he is getting is out of order.
Playing for us is a big stick that they are loving to beat him with.

These are also the same "fans" that think Parker is better than Barry.

Anyone seen any opta stats showing how far Milner ran compared to the rest of the team?

I'm not having a pop at you directly, but I think this kind of question is one of the problems with modern day analysis of football players. People assume if he covered loads of ground he must have played well. That is bollocks i'm afraid.

Firstly, an intelligent player doesn't go tear arseing around the pitch chasing after the ball. The best way to analyse a player is to actually watch him play and look at what he did during the match.

There was one instance when Gerrard had the ball and was screaming at Milner to run beyond his full back so he could give it to him, Milner looked at him like a rabbit caught in the headlights, Gerrard pointed exactly where he wanted him to run, and Milner eventually made the run, far too late.

If you judge players solely on stats you might as well get Damien Comoli in and buy Henderson, Downing, Adam and Carroll.

I'm sure Aguero doesn't cover as much ground as Dickov, which one would you rather have in your team?

and by the same token picking out one instance where he made the wrong run doesn't mean he wasn't effective in his running for most of the match.

its quite funny actually, everyone was screaming for walcott to start and then to come on, but when he did he touched the ball once. he looked like the normal theo who is lucky to be getting anywhere near the england team. he scores one goal, creates one goal and everyone thinks he's a world class right winger. he wouldn't have done more than milner.

and milner is clearly the new scape goat, now that barry isn't in the team. england fans clearly have an anti-city agenda (i said it), and city players get the most abuse now. how many plaudits has lescott got? not many, most are ignoring his performances. imagine if phil jones or smelling was doing what lescott is doing.

its quite embarrassing, and england fans are calling for a 442 against italy with ashley young and walcott on the wings. lol! milner will start the next game
