The MLS is split into two leagues, east and west (and the middle teams fall whichever is nearest!)
So yes the winners of the Atlantic league (which is my name for it, it is the eastern conference or something like that) plays the Pacific (western conference) in the grand final.
Previously the final was played at a neutral ground but they attracted poor attendances (obviously if say New England play LA or Seattle in New Orleans!) so this year the game will be played at the home of the team in the final with the best league record.
Should The Revs make the final, it will be in either LA or Seattle..... not many away fans there for either, but should be a full house......

I'm not 'dis'ing it, but it does seem a poor idea to play a whole season of league matches just to, effectively, end up in a cup final and still have to win that for it to mean anything.

I guess I might just be too used to the traditional league approach, but 'gilding the lily' springs to mind. I assume its necessary to conform to American expectations and a desire to carry it on to the last moment, and that someone winning with games still to play would be the death knell of US soccer.

I get what your saying but the team that comes top overall in the leagues also wins what's called the 'supporters shield'. By looking at the history of that you can see who actually won the league. It's not as though if you win the league and lose in the playoffs you end up with nothing; although speaking to some americans recently they seemed to think the MLS cup (what you get at the end of the playoffs) was many more times important than the supporters shield, which is wrong way round for my liking.

Same system operates in Rugby Union and League.

The thing with MLS is (to my knowledge) teams don't play every team home and away. I know the first year I was here 2011 / 12, Beckham and LA Galaxy didn't play in Boston, though the Revs played in LA. The reasoning I was given when asked was ''it cuts down on the travelling''.

Same thing with Baseball - the Rag Sox play the Yankees 27 times a season (that's 9 x 3 game series) but they will play, say, San Diego way less than that, as well as other teams the other side of the country. So a league system in having the Champions as the winners doesn't quite cut it here. Imagine The Rev's being one point behind LA Galaxy at the end of the season - yet only played them once in the season. Had they played the second time, and won, they could be champions.
