if you lose or damage your phone beyond repair and have no insurance do you then have to continue to pay your contract for the full term without having use of a phone or could you buy a cheap PAYG phone and use that under your contract?

Tell them you've lost it and they should send you new sim with the same number. Just phone up, saying you have lost the sim, they offered my mr's a new sim and the same phone, with the same contract remaining for one month line rental and 3 months worth of insurance.
So in all it cost about £70 - £80 but it was a lot cheaper than buying out of the contract.
