tried an anti-popup for couple of days but it hasn't worked (thanks for the suggestion anyway, mat)

i keep receiving full page popups, and worryingly some of them are pretending to be windows security alerts

anyone got any suggestions as to how i can stop them?

As riot says. Can't beat Firefox for the extra security.

firefox is an alternative browser which knocks the shit out of IE.

It also has the wonderful stumble upon addon where you'll find some wierd and wonderfully random internet shit.

I also use opera from time to time which is very simple to use.

already have windows defender but thanks fo the tip anyway

Another possibility is goto add/remove programs in control panel and check if there are any 'free search tools' installed or any other unwanted shit.
