moss side early 80s

When I was younger I played pool at county level and if I do say so myself I was half decent and I played in the Moss Side league which was ok until the individual knock out was drawn as if you got an away tie you would walk into a strange pub on your own and sometimes I was the only white guy in there.
You had to man up beat the guy and get the fuck out as fast as you could.
However at County level my team mates often wondered why I never suffered from nerves or got intimidated at games.
It was one thing walking around Moss side on match day and another thing on your own on a dark Thursday night with just your pool cue!

Pretty sure that's a young Mickey Francis third from the left.
It certainly looks like a younger version of him.

First Left.. Chris Francis. Third left ..Mike and Far Right.. Donald.

Born on Thornton Road at the end of the 50's, when we moved to Withington shortly after my Auntie moved into the house and rented it for the best part of 45 years before she passed. My mate Billy owned the Pawnshop on Princess Road (until the riots obviously) when he had to close down. I remember him telling me he was thinking of opening nights because there were more people on a Princess Road at half three in the morning than there was at half three in the afternoon. We used to go to a barbers on Claremont Road, think it was called Arties, that was an education in itself for a young teenager!

My Grandad and his seven brothers were from a Polish family and grew up in Cheetham Hill but he moved to Moss Side in the early 50s. My Nan and all her family had grown up in Moss Side. My Mam and two uncles and all their cousins lived in Moss Side in the 50s 60s and 70s but had been moved out to Wythenshawe by the early 80s.

My Mam has always said that Moss Side was a tidy place in the 60s. Tough but tidy, and people didn't fuck about with the area because the lads who knew the older lads in long trench coats would want a word with you. She said by the mid 70s people were more ferrel. Sofas and mattresses in the ginnels, parties all night, prostitutes walking the streets as soon as it was twilight, those older lads in the long coats weren't about anymore and it was a far less safe place to live and it started to get scruffy as fuck.

She said by the time her road was cleared and they were all moved to Wythenshawe she was glad because it wasn't the same place as she'd known growing up.

My experience of Moss Side and going to City didn't start until the late 80s. As a six year old it felt very dangerous but I always liked it. Don't get the same buzz going to Etihad as I did going to Maine Road.

Used to play five a side at Moss Side leisure centre on Wednesday nights in the early-mid 80s as a teenager. Fucking hell, that was lively and you soon learned to wear your 'game face' and how not to show any fear. Loved it, though. We were a mixed black and white team and some of the brothers used to call us 'Borstal'.
lovely memories ....!!!!!!!!!!!!

Used to play there myself! People still talk about an absolute screamer I scored there one night, well I still talk about it!

I played for the Aquarius Youth Club in Hulme, Boundary Lane. Anyone remember Ron, the black american guy who used to run Aquarius?

Happy days!
