There’s some nice villages in the area between Leek and Ashbourne. I think Waterhouses is one of them. Used to travel through on the bus to Derby university.

A new house and a new start is in order soon, we have young nephews and nieces in Derbyshire, just north of Alfreton, and the missus wants to be a bit closer as they grow up. So my question...

Obviously I don't want to be too close, so can anyone recommend of a decent village/ area in that part of the country that has a decent pub and a shop but is within 30 minutes drive?

It is better to travel in the Hope Valley than to arrive

Anywhere between Matlock and Belper, can be a bit remote though, esp in winter.
Chesterfield is less than half hour and is excellent for pubs, also there are a few villages on the A61 between Chesterfield and Alfreton.
Lots of new houses recently built in South Normanton, 5 minutes from Alfreton and right next to the M1 but I can’t vouch for the pubs.
