Not long ago, I received a phone from a nervous foreign speaking chap who in formed me that my computer was showing signs of malicious virus attacks and they would clear it up for me.

Now, I may have listened to him more if

a) he wasn't as nervous and stuttering as he was and

b) I had not read a thread on a similar thing in the summer (big thanks, by the way)

So, the curious side of me decided to play along, some, to see what they'd say. The first caller put me on to his supervisor who proceeded to inform me that the virus had infected my machine and was showing on "one or two central servers".

Really? You don't know 'which'...?

He went on to ask me to input the name of the website that could help me. Foolishly I never actually listened to the spelling of the site, but just uttered "Yeah... Uh huh" after each letter.

When he said 'press enter' I asked him what his company was called. he declined to answer but said that they offered pc help like PC World.

At that point I told him I was suspicious and he quickly wound up the call.

I wish I'd gotten more info out of him.

Always Google it if you're unsure. They can always call back if it's genuine.

I tried leading the Nigerian Prince scammer on once but as soon as he realised my e-mail address was valid then I got spammed to hell and back. Serves me right.

I did try and Google it as I talked to the second guy 'Kevin', but it got a bit too late. I never gave him any details, nor type in what he wanted me too. Next time, I shall be armed properly.

I just hope the wife doesn't answer when I'm not in!!

I had one of these calls yesterday. Don't really know what the point of them are.

Asian lady said she worked for Windows technical support and started carping on about viruses and problems with my computer. After two or three minutes I asked her how she knew my computer was a problem and asked her what she thought my IP address was. She then hung up...........
I don't know if she realised that she was not going to get anywhere with me or my question actually triggered something. I am not into the tech side of computers but maybe my bluff worked.

You do strike me as being a street wise Guy tbh. Although these scams have enough of a success rate for them to continue to call people up.

I kept one of these clowns on the phone for 17 minutes. Just kept acting dumb and doing stupid things. Eventually they asked me for payment details and I told them I was only 12 and they must have wanted my Dad who has the same name. Put my 'Dad' on and he was more stupid than me. They gave up half way through.

I did make the mistake of calling one a few names though - he kept calling back saying I was a 'nasty man'. Did get worried though as the number just showed as something like 110 and it was obvioulsy foreign so it'd be nigh on impossible to stop him if he'd carried on til 4 in the morning.

LOL!!!

Genius, that!! I may well try that one. The number I had started out '001xx' and then cut off!

yeah sorry about that bigga, I didn't realise it was you until you started asking me about the size of my arse and whether I was wearing my fishnet catsuit. I won't call again.
