Myanmar ethnic cleansing

Except for all of those companies that make the equipment for war, you mean?

But yeah, you can be a tyrant, as long as you're our tyrant. The second your average dictator decides they want to side with someone else though, they suddenly become a huge human rights concern.

Spot on. Seems there are appeasers and appeasers in this world - just depends whether you are appeasing the "right" regime at the "right time"

Companies don’t go to war though; countries do. Nobody in their right mind would go to war to enrich a company by an absolute miniscule of the financial and human loss suffered by their country. This is the real world not Tomorrow Never Dies.

I think that's a very naive position. You don't think that weapons manufacturers contribute to political campaigns? Or put their money behind campaigns that will make the increased (or let's be honest, continued) use of their products more likely? Politicians have a long history of working in the interests of their financial backers over the people who elected them. What makes you think it would be any different on defence?

I’ve never said there won’t be lobbying. There’ll be lobbying from companies who have all kinds of different agendas (including ones that have a vested interest not to go to war). But in an age where party political donations are available for everyone to see (in this country at least) and money is traced very easily and the PR/criminal consequences for companies/directors could be catastrophic if they overstep the mark, I doubt the lobbying will be anywhere near as vociferous enough to be persuasive when a Prime Minister or President is faced with the decision to go to war knowing that it will potentially cost his or her country thousands of soldiers and trillions of dollars. I’m sure their re-election chances will be much more affected by making the right decision to go to war than accepting a hundred thousand dollar donation every 4 or 5 years.

Not heard of this till now. The Guardian implies it is Buddhist militia trying to stop a mainly Muslim influx would that be a fair, if not over simplistic assessment?

Yep. Trump looks like he's siding with China and North Korea. What should be done about him?

No but Western states rely on oil - plus prominent countries can promote their own interests in countries where they intervene. For oil you can substitute mineral ores, natural resources and strategic places - if an airstrip in a place would be handy all the more reason to help people out eh? Afterall you never know for sure when you might need to do a bit of extraordinary rendition and need a refuelling stop.
The Capitalist monster is always hungry. There's allegedly trillions of dollars worth of mineral reserves in North Korea. No wonder their leader fears being Gaddafied...
