The previous tenant of our house moved out about 18 months ago. Yesterday, I received a letter in his name with a CD from the recording company.
It's not my style of music so am considering selling it. Only problem is the album doesn't get released on general sale for another 2-3 weeks.

I could stick it on E-bay and get £20-30, but risk the wrath of the recording company if they find out, stick it on E-bay when its released and get £10-15.
Third option is stick it on notice board in work now. Might only get £15-20.

Any advise anyone?

Send it back with a letter explaining the previous tenant has moved.

Is it worth being a thief for the sake of £20 ?

I don't know where the previous tenant is now so can't do that.

There is no return address for the recording company, only a name.
Am I really being a thief when the CD was sent to my house?
Surely it's the previous guys responsibility to ensure his mail is forwarded to his new address after all this time.

Ok. So you've not heard from the previous tenant in a while and don't know where he is. But what if he calls out of the blue and says "Hiya, I was expecting a CD that probably got sent to your house and wondered if you could send it on please, here's my new address....."

Also I'm sure a recording companies address is easily obtainable with a small internet search...

If the mail is not meant for you then it's an offence to tamper with someone else's mail:

Postal Services Act 2000

(3) A person commits an offence if, intending to act to a person’s detriment and without reasonable excuse, he opens a postal packet which he knows or reasonably suspects has been incorrectly delivered to him.

So yes, you would be a thief. Chances are that the CD are a promo meant for the previous tenant and because they've not had contact for a while, they've sent it to his previous address. At worst, you can put it back in the postbox marked "Return to sender" and even if there is no address on the envelope the Post Office can legally open the packet to make whatever enquiries they need to establish where it's from so as to ascertain the correct return address. They're very good at doing this.

Knowing all this, as you do now, I guess it's down to your conscience. I'm sure some fellow blues are thieves, there's loads in prison, but there's no point making it public that you are, is there?

It's an offence to open somebody else's mail even if it as come to your address. Write 'Not at this address' and stick it in the postbox.

The right thing to do would be to upload it to various torrent sites and Rapidshare providing links on various music blogs. ;)

Is the album any good?
