Neil Young demands Spotify remove his music.

Taking it off topic slightly...fuck me what an amazing song Cortez the Killer is.

One of my favourite songs of all time, some incredible guitar work in there.

Also off topic, but he's married to Daryl Hannah now. Not sure why I found that interesting.

But he's happy to be on the same streaming platform (Apple Music) with Gary Glitter, R Kelly and Ian Watkins? Is misinformation worse than pedophilia? How far does he go?
Is he? I have no idea whether he is happy or not about such as he hasn't said.

Joe Rogan is also a stupid ****.

That's not cancelling him either.
Stupid takes many forms and most of us exhibit one or two of them. Rogan does seem to be open minded about pretty much everything and some people just feel threatened by anything that doesn't conform to their own view. He does seem to attract some 'gamey' guests that generally wouldn't get airtime anywhere else and I think that also troubles some folk who feel their fellow humans need protected from certain ideas, perspectives and points of view. I still have enough faith in humanity to think they are entitled to make their own minds up. I'm more worried about the glamourisation of the kray twins, and wierd amount of time devoted to Hitler and his mates in documentaries than anything Rogan does. I find rogans 3-4hr format boring tbh.

Showing my age a bit (and lack of culture...) but I've honestly never heard of Neil Young.

776th most listened to artist on Spotify so I would assume there's a lot of people who haven't heard of him either.

Out of curiosity, what is your age?

This very nicely sums up the problem with Joe Rogan and his listeners.

Joe Rogan isn't qualified to have a debate about the history of the middle east, and HR Mcmaster has an infamously one-sided and American perspective on the region.

That's not an informed or informative debate. It's a person with 1 opinion giving it to someone who doesn't know anything, who doesn't know if he's getting lied to, or bullshitted, or being the dumb host of some fringe conspiracy theories and damaging misinformation.

A proper, educational discussion would take the form of Radio 4's In Our Time.

There you have Melvyn Bragg, a guy with a 50 year career in non-fiction broadcasting who spends weeks researching each topic, and then 3 different experts, with differing opinions are on a panel and they have an hour long discussion about something.

That's serious discussion of big topics. Not a second rate comedian staring blankly at someone while they reel off their thesis and trying to bring every single subject back to psychedelic drugs or memes.

Being gormless and "asking questions" doesn't make you neutral. You have to know a topic to regulate and challenge your "interesting guests" when they try and misrepresent things. You have to know which questions to ask, and when.
Bragg's In Our Time is fantastic.

I mean...just look at the people from 750-800ish and you can see these are all still household name music artists.

Doesn't matter how old you are, you should be able to work out roughly how big a name he is from seeing Ice Cube, Lily Allen, Beastie Boys, Cat Stevens, Kylie Minogue, The National, Nas, Arcade Fire, Will.I.Am around him.

I heard of all of them apart from 'The National'. So there's definitely (big) gaps in my music knowledge!

But yes you're right with your point that lots of people will miss his absence. Joe Rogan is a much bigger name though so I guess they will have to just take it on the chin.

Just checked my last.fm account. Apparently I have actually played one Neil Young song - My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue) in 35,000 songs played!

Early 30s.

Other famous Neil's (not artists) I've heard of include Neil Diamond, Neil Jenkins, Neil Hodgson, Neil Morrissey but Neil Young nope...
Lol, That's funny. on your list I have only heard of Neil Diamond.
I assumed you were either in your 70's or in your teens.
Never heard of Crosby Stills Nash and Young?

Out of interest, who are some of your own most played artists on Spotify?

It's a big old world. Shows you that we all have our own pockets of knowledge. And probably no two people are the same.

I just tried searching for Neil Crosby, Neil Stills etc then... Ha. But no never heard of the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young supergroup until a few minutes ago.

I mean that list is obviously heavily skewed towards more recent artists. Almost all of the top 100 are people who are still making music. If you look at any newish artists who are around the 700th most streamed artist, they likely haven't got a pot to piss in, whereas Neil Young is worth about $200m. And that's why musicians hate Spotify.

As for Joe Rogan, I've watched his podcast a few times, but only when he has someone on it I'm interested in. His whole thing is being an every man, and that can lead to some good content, especially when it comes to guests like scientists and intellectuals, because he asks the questions that ordinary people might have. Where it can be an issue is that when he has a guest who has some controversial views, he's not in a position to really challenge them in any way, so his show can end up at times being a huge uninterrupted platform for people with some pretty dodgy views.

I've not really followed him since before covid though, so I don't really know what's going on with all of this covid bollocks he's apparently got himself involved in.

4hr podcast with Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson out now I think

like listening to both so should be good
