Nelson Mandela RIP

You see the true character of a man, not when he needs something from you, but when he's got power over you. Truly great men use power, those who falter, abuse it. It is this which marks him as a great man in my eyes. When he acquired power he didn't use it to seek retribution over those who oppressed him, but rather as a force for cohesion and reconciliation.

"If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner."

I tell you what it is about Mandela, as I've been thinking about what it is about him that appeals to me, whilst I was ironing a shirt - butler's taken his usual two day annual holiday I'm afraid.
What?? You've let your butler take a weekday off!! What's the world coming to. Shakes head

One of the few heroes of the world has passed away. A man who carried himself with enormous grace, dignity, and humility.

For 27 long years he was imprisoned on Robben Island for having the courage of his convictions and an unbending belief in equality for all. Yet when he emerged from his prison cell he bore no malice towards those who had deprived him of his liberty for all those years.

He truly demonstrated the power of one.

An inspirational person for so many. His selfless deeds will live long in the hearts of all those who believe in justice.

Must be a real slap in the face to some of the idiots that have posted in this thread to see so many white South African's talk about what a hero he was to the whole nation.

It's a shame the great man hasn't been able to see the South Africa he really wanted, and who knows what would have happened if he hadn't spent 27 years in prison?!

RIP Madiba. A true hero to many and a lifetime given to others.

He works 72 hours without break from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day, so The Lord giveth and The Lord taketh away.

You have to love BBC's interpretation of a Nelson Mandela time line...

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-20713377" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-20713377</a>

The BBC have referred to his terror years as 'the early years'. They have completely ignored his violence.
