You have to love BBC's interpretation of a Nelson Mandela time line...

The BBC have referred to his terror years as 'the early years'. They have completely ignored his violence.

Well if they do then so shall I.

Freedom!

Maybe it should be 'His battle against a racist regime that beat, killed and raped black people'?

Honestly the way some of you are going on you'd think he should have just invited Apartheid round for a cup of tea and the only arguement should have been rich tea or jammy dodgers.

I tell you what it is about Mandela, as I've been thinking about what it is about him that appeals to me, whilst I was ironing a shirt - butler's taken his usual two day annual holiday I'm afraid.
What?? You've let your butler take a weekday off!! What's the world coming to. Shakes head
He works 72 hours without break from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day, so The Lord giveth and The Lord taketh away.

You never had to sanction staff holidays under Apartheid rule.

Too soon?

That's a very good point. I think Mandela had his faults in his earlier years but there was no doubt that he eventually became a remarkable human being. However, I would be interested to know if he was in any way involved in sanctioning the more indiscriminate bombing campaigns of the ANC during the 1970's and 1980's which resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians. I can't see how he could've approved of such behaviour but I'm not sure it's ever been proven either way has it?

Is it right we will have a minutes silence for Mandela yet did not have one for Thatcher ?

YEP....

I'm sure I read somewhere a while back that Thatcher went on record as early as 1961 in opposing Apartheid. And her opposing sanctions doesn't equate to her supporting Apartheid.

As for Cameron, well I'm not sure whether that is true or not. If it is, then it's very unsavoury but let's not forget that back in the mid-1980's the ANC (and by some extension, rightly or wrongly, Mandela himself) weren't exactly flavour of the month with too many governments around the world.

Everyone who justifies the ANC bombings in the 1980s seems to be forgetting the victims of his terrorism were not the white oppressors, they were mostly black people out shopping.

We also have to accept the terrorism did not bring about change. To suggest it did is to signal to any potential terrorist that violence works.

Change happened in spite of the terrorism after a sustained program of enlightenment of the electorate.

Mandela never renounced his violence nor apologised to his victims, despite his talk of reconciliation.

Well we definitely know his wife Winnie certainly was as she encouraged the act of tyre burning innocents in a speech.

I respect Nelson Mandela greatly and has lived an extraordinary life! I take my hat off to him for leading a peace campaign during his 27 years in prison. I haven’t even been alive for that period of time and to me what he did was sensational.

However, I am a history fan and what I can’t stand is people who are very selective with their history (a bit like the rags) and dismiss events which they are ashamed of. The BBC is supposed to be unbiased and factual. I was simply stating that it was a bit poor not to really mention his violence, bombings and terror acts before his imprisonment. If you lost a relative to an ANC bombing I don't think you'd want to dismiss that chapter in history would you?

Mandela/ANC killed and raped black people too. They were a terrorist organization.

I guess the IRA are worse to the cool kids/lefties as they are white.

It's the old finger pointing at its best.
