New Boots/Shin Pads.... Are they worse for Footballers?

I've been thinking about this for some time.

If I play football I always buy boots which are relatively padded. I remember wearing some T90's or whatever they are called and they felt so thin. One challenge in those bad boys and I feared the worst for my feet. I also wear full ankle protected shin pads.

I see most footballers wearing such thin shin pads. I work in a gym as a trainer - if I injure myself I can't do my job.

Basically, in light of recent events would better protected shin pads and boots help stop so many broken Metatarsals/Tibia/Fibias if they wore more protection? Granted sometimes the tackle is hurrendous but still... surely some thicker shin pads should be worn by players to protect themselves?

Thoughts guys? From memory there wasn't half as many broken bones not so long ago. Or at least it wasn't made to be as big a deal.

I play a good bit and prefer smaller, thinner shin pads as they are less obstructive.

I get your point about the better protection, but I'd play without pads if I could, I grew up playing on the streets, never wore them and now find them a pain in the ring if I'm honest.

Boots, I only ever wear puma kings. Multi studs and 6 studs for the wet. I think I've worn my multi's twice!!

Fair enough, I wear Nike Tiempo SG's. Taken quite a few whacks in the shins before. Wore shin pads ever since!

I hate seeing footballers wear such thin boots, one hard knock on their feet and it looks awful. I fear the worst for a lot of City players, but we've been lucky in terms of broken bones for our players. (Bar Mad Zab and Vinny K).

Any player who doesn't wear anything to protect their ankles is a fool.

On the boots, they are alot thinner and far more supple than they were when I played 15 years ago, in fact they're almost like slippers. If the ball was heavier (and I don't mean with laces like the one Stan Mathews played with) the players would wear thicker, more robust boots which would offer far more protection. It seems that the lighter the ball gets the thinner the boots become.

The issue for me isn't whether the boots are too thin or not it's whether the boots are "worn"

Many players (pro) seem to wear a fresh brand new pair of boots for every game, now running in a brand new pair of trainers feels completely different and for me more uncomfortable than running in a pair of trainers that i have covered some miles in as the shoe becomes more shaped around the unique shape of the foot.

These boots may cost £100+ or whatever but they are made generically and the players feet haven't adapted to them yet, which can cause injury when running around for 90mins.

Finally - players used to just play with many of the injuries we see common on the field now, I see many players pull up with a slight niggle and they flag to be taken off the field - given 3weeks rest.
This is because they are valuable assets to the club and i can imagine the physio's instructing them to do this.

Players weren't aware of their physical health many years ago and would play with niggles, even if they understood the injury they would probably continue to play in fear of losing their first team place.
Players now earn so much money they can afford to not be playing.

ive always worn sort of more retro boots as they do protect your foot more, and all these boots with "pretty colours" that you see that wanker ronaldo wearing look stupid. hate to say it as i fucking hate him but fergie has the right idea making the scum play in plain black boots to stop ego's.

Any Premier League player with a boot contract (i.e. most of them) wear bespoke boots that have been specially made to exactly fit their feet. They don't need to be broken in and moulded around their feet, as they already are. I doubt those who aren't so fortunate wear new boots every game.

centre half if the IFA irish amature league and for this position you NEED a sturdy boot, i currently wear the T90 lazer II and they have a fair bit of protection for the top of the boot.
but i cannot imagine wearing anything like the nike vapors or adidas f50 wear they are designed for speed and agility, therefore are literally like wearing a tesco bag over your bare foot.

personally i never play football without wearing shin pads with ankle protection.
iv seen people say 'sure its only one game' then some thug comes in studs up and there ankle/shin snaps like a twig.

I see the types of shin pads some players wear and I just cringe. John Terry has the tiniest shin pads I have ever seen and he is a defender ffs!

One mis-timed tackle on his ankle and at his age it's career over.
