New CL Format Thoughts

I think that the problem is that UEFA said every game would have jeopardy. Yet after 4 games there are at least 5 teams who cannot qualify for the KO stages. I think that livarpool only need 1 more win to guarantee being in the KO phase.
All teams can still qualify for the play-off round and could then progress to the full knock-out phase.

Eighth place team has nine points after four games so the requirement could be eighteen points if there was equal difficulty in the first four games. We have seven points so three wins could be tight and three wins and a draw might not be enough.
Some clubs may not be able to make the play-offs when the final two games are played and could field weak or experimental sides thus giving their opponents a huge advantage. This is unlikely to include PSG and Brugge.

Exactly, it's like the Nations League of club football. Dull and utterly uninteresting.
Don’t know what the answer is but the group stages had been fucking wank for years. At least you play some varied teams in this and a couple of decent ones. Obviously it’s many a money grab with the extra games. Football is fucked though anyway as we all know. Our club prove it regularly by constantly shitting on their diehard fans.

It isn’t working.

There’s no jeopardy in such a big league table, regardless if you play the best teams and worst teams. Even finishing in the expanded play off section of the table still gives you a chance to go through to the final stages, but it means people have to pay for another game, on top of paying for more games at this stage of the CL. That’s what it’s about, more games, fans paying more money, they aren’t.

2100 tickets left.
With CBL3 still greyed out.

never thought we cannot make top8 after I was delighted with the draw we got. right now its more likely we wonnt do top8. 16 points is about the get in mount of points. we have 8 points and 3 games left. beating PSG and Juventus both away from home is not possible in current form. beating Brugge should be simple as was Feyenoord. origanlly calculated with 3 points in Sporting game and Feyenoord allowing us two draws vs PSG and Juventus. but now these games turned must wins.

unlikely 15 points is enough maybe in some rare scenario with the best GD if there are only 7 teams are on 16+ points. we cannot finish on 16 points anyway now either 17 or 15 the best possible points.

but go to Juventus next gamee with the need of a win they will happily sit back and counter us and that we wont like as they wont concede 3 like Feyenoord but can score from 2 as well from 3-4 shots vs Ederson.

having said that the table will be extremely close on the bottom end as well around 24th place, 11 points may be enough to reach that but could be 12 too. beating Brugge and not losing both harder ones gets that sorted for us but being anywhere between 20-24th in this system is a sucker, we start at home and decide the tie away vs a club that just missed out on top8. all this exercise just to get into the last 16. with the risk of fucking up and playing 10 games not even get there.

I think the positives and negatives of the new format even themselves out. The main positive being that a team with ten points finishing third in a group doesn't go out while a team finishing second with eight (or fewer) points goes through as happened in our first CL season. The main negative is that pot one teams have to play other pot one teams and don't gain any benefit from winning their domestic leagues.
From a City perspective, we have too many fans who just can't be arsed with the tournament. I'm convinced I've gone to the wrong seat at every CL home game as I hardly recognise anybody sat near me.
Finally, I think a win v Bruges will give us enough points to finish in the top 24, so that's another game to fork out for in January.

Last night’s result doesn’t even really matter. Finish in the Top24 and you go through to the KO preliminary round anyway. The format rewards shitness.

By 10pm tonight, even with how shit we’ve been in this competition so far this season, we could still be 22nd. We only really need one more win from the 3 remaining games, we can be absolutely shite in two others. Yet that will probably still see us through comfortably to the KO prelim round.

That’s no good. Being as shit as we’ve been we should be crashing out yet we’re afforded the chance to still get through. That’s not elite competition.

To be honest I’d rather finish 25th this season, go out, and concentrate on finishing 4th in the PL so we’re in the CL for any new signings next Summer. Whether we get in the 24 or even sneak the 8, we aren’t winning the CL this season. Although it would be funny as fuck if we finished 24th and, despite not being very good, going on a mad run of random wins out of nowhere and winning the whole thing, would make a mockery of the competition.

I mentioned it earlier in the thread, and that is it will be interesting to see the points total for the 8th placed team with this format. I'm unsure what it will be at the moment.

One possible benefit (and certainly my last straw to clutch) is that our injury issues might have improved considerably by the time we reach the Last 32 and hopefully provide some impetus

Otherwise my opinion hasn't changed.
UEFA will continue to meddle with the format until eventually it resembles a European Super League with more teams separated by promotion and relegation

I estimated 16 points at the start of the season and I'm sticking to that guess. I might increase it to 17 if Dortmund and Villa win tonight.

Just in passing, as it were… not a few people on here were distinctly irritated that we ‘only’ drew our first game against Inter. I thought and said at the time that it was a high quality precision game between two very good teams who were sort of playing chess with each other, grandmaster level.
I note where Inter are now in the table. They are amongst the two or three favourites for this cup. We, sadly, are not at present.

I've tried to keep an open mind but that will be it I suspect. Tall order now for us to get up there.

It's a mockery when the winners aren't even champions of their own domestic league.

Not really.
Do you think it would be better if the champions of Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland were in this years competition instead of Barcelona, Arsenal or Bayern.
