I;m thinking it's about time I upgraded my Desktop PC, and I've started to get back into playing a few PC games and might go for Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen in the coming months. The minimum specs were an eye opener:

Elite Dangerous

Minimum recommended hardware specification:

Direct X 11
Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
4 GB System RAM (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU with 1GB video ram
Nvidia GTX 260
ATI 4870HD
Internet connection

Supported Operating Systems:

Windows 7.x
Windows 8.x

Being that I am still on XP(!) on the desktop and support has ended, it's a good time for me to look around. Budget is around £750 tops but I can't be arsed building one myself this time around.

Anyone know of any good deals at the moment? Am thinking quad core CPU and an Nvidia 750/6760 GPU and 8GB DDR3 as minimum requirements, this caught my eye:

Anything better out there for the money?

Try SCAN Computers in Bolton for options.

Check the case cooling and power supply of the Medion, I can't see them listed. Once you have all the components, go to http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/ and see how much it would be to build it yourself for comparison, but it also checks power ratings etc and there's lots of user comment for each component. Then you'll know how much you are paying for building it (which is worth it because the warranty is usually more straight forward).

If you are doing a lot of gaming then go for more cooling and power than basic recommendation.

I was looking at similar to this a while back. I was only looking for a fairly decent desktop though, not top end for gaming.
Cheap and decent spec on the outset, probably cheap parts hence the price, but I can't see a major fault for the cost.
No OS though.
The one listed above is just an example, there are loads on there if you search. Some cheaper some slightly more expensive.

How much tinkering do you want or are prepared to do yourself ?

Alienware are decent if you want a well known name.
Chillblast and a few others do custom rigs to that spring to mind.

What is your budget?, that link is not working for me so can't see what it costs.

Thanks for suggestions so far. Budget is £750 max,, the Medion one I have seen (linked to Lenovo) I can get for £680 and is for as follows, but as pointed out there is no info on PSU, motherboard and cooling:

Intel® Core™ i7-4790 processor
Windows 8.1
2TB HDD, 256 GB SSD
8 GB RAM memory
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 750 Ti graphics

After building my last 2 PCs I could do it again, but having a little one and just not having the time to do it (let alone a clear space!) and to tinker around with upgrades means I would probably value a 2-3 year warranty more than the cost saving of building it myself. After that I would probably look to double the RAM up to 16GB anyway.

Pretty must everything I have looked at from Alienware, Chillblast, custom PC builders etc, even Aria PC here in Manchester, comes to around £900-1000 for a similar set up.

I've just built my eldest lad his 1st gaming PC, cost around £940 (without k/b, mouse, headset and monitor)

this is his build: -

1 8GB (2x4GB) Corsair Vengeance Blue 1600MHz CL9 DDR3 Dual/Quad Channel Kit [CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B] £ 64.79
1 2TB Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 3.5" SATA III Hard Drive - HDD £ 58.74
1 1TB Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 3.5" SATA III Hard Drive - HDD £ 39.54
1 650W XFX Pro XXX Edition 80PLUS Bronze Modular Power Supply [P1-650X-XXB9] £ 62.98
1 Intel Core i5-4670 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £ 161.94
1 Arianet Dominator Midi Tower Gaming Case £ 35.99
1 Windows 8.1 64Bit Operating System DVD English International £ 75.35
1 Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5 Intel Z97 ATX Motherboard £ 105.00
1 Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 GAMING WindForce 3x OC 4096MB GDDR5 (Maxwell) Nvidia PCI Express Graphics Card £ 295.19
1 Antec Kuhler 650 CPU AIO Watercooler £ 35.99

I had an old HD1080p 60hz monitor that i gave him and managed to get a gaming mouse, gaming keyboard and gaming headset bundle for £65

Depends how much you want to spend though mate, my rig is similar to his but i have 16gb ram, a £75 gaming mouse, £100 k/b and £100 headset. I also have the asus VG248QE HD1080p 144hz 3D gaming monitor, which is amazing but is £250

Ahh yeah just saw the cons in reviews.
Slow fps on very high end games.

Probably gonna have to build if he wants to clear the bar spec wise for the cost then you reckon shady ?

yup, if i went to buy the pre-built system i specc'd above for my lad, i would be paying around £1500. But because i bought at wholesale and built myself, i saved the £500 mark up
