Ignoring the politicians/mandarins getting stuff for managing to do their day job without getting caught in a compromising position with a marmoset or whatever the bar is these days, I think the women's footballer show the problem with this sort of stuff. As I understand it a small number of them got something, on the one hand it was clearly triggered by the Euros win but on the other they didn't want to do a blanket thing for the entire team so what exactly was the criteria? I would have thought that for their combination of on and off the field work Kirby and Pariss were at least as worthy as the ones who got it? Strikes me as a bit random and whether your face fits.
I don't begrudge people who are doing great things in the community being recognised but again I suspect it's hugely partial.
A few years ago I got an unsolicited call from a firm who offered 'consulting' services to acquire a place on the honours list. Quite bizarre and shows what a bit of farce it is.
