Newcastle (A) | Wed 27th Sept | EFL Cup | Post Match Thread

HEHEHE, you just have to love the media narrative AGAINST City winning stuff!

Pep must be, quietly, very happy the second string got a good run out, against a decent team. They were streets ahead in the first half and went toe to toe in the second, even if we didn’t look too dangerous.

Great to see Lewis, Bobb and Gomez getting good minutes and doing well, until Lewis let the ball go for the goal. Thought Akanji & Gvardiol did fine, but the forward line looked impotent in the first half and non-existent in the second half.

We don’t like aggression and having an opponent “up us,” but we don’t come up against it very often.

Yet another example of City blowing their massive domination of possession and opportunities.

Again…Pep’s happy this is wiped from the calendar for the rest of the season. There are two competitions that matter and this is FOURTH!

You’d think Newcastle were a league one side the way the sky commentators were talking. Ridiculously bias commentatory!

We weren’t at it, but no shame in losing to them
also forgot to mention we were not gonna make it past quarters didnt they

simple truth is you can't win them all and having won this a few times I suspect it has slipped down the order for Pep and the club. We can't be rags and dippers and feel entitled it's happened and we just move on

The reality is it’s probably for the best. Those two semi‘s in January are always a killer. Newcastle are a horrible bunch of dirty bastards with a snidey shithouse of a manager and that’s why I wanted us to smash them, but that’s my emotions getting in the way.

Safe journey back all you blue boys.
We’ve got options now to play the Brentford home game, either the midweek of the next round of the Carabao Cup or the semi final dates in January, every cloud.

Another referee for whom there is huge conjecture as to who he supports, with the whistler having been born in Manchester.
The fact that he has taken charge of eight United and seven City games means that despite the speculation, he does not follow one of the big teams. Suggestions that he supports Stalybridge Celtic have not been confirmed.

The ref is from Ashton. Do i even need to suggest the obvious? Also who the fuck are Stalybridge Celtics.
He's a Liverpool fan.

He might yet start at the weekend...
It’s not in our interests to isolate anyone now, as we simply cannot rule out the possibility of more injuries, though I do think you might be right.
He won't start at the weekend.

Felt like we treated it as a “run out” / training session rather than a proper game.

Didn’t seem interested in scoring or in rescuing the game when we went behind.

We’ll be glad of the rest and bring out of it will come in handy when the fixtures start to pile up.

Thought Gomez played well.

Didn’t see enough from Phillips.

Saw flashes from Bobb, but he needs to develop his radar to avoid trouble rather than relying on his feet to get him out of trouble. Decent first full 90 from the kid.

Didn’t see enough from Phillips! He made 112 passes and had a very respectable 91% pass completion.

I thought Phillips did ok, he may have misplaced the odd pass but most players on that pitch tonight did too. It’s Grealish who is going to have to book his ideas up. IMO, he will not get his place back in front of Doku with a performance like that. Gomez did ok for me in midfield, I’m not yet convinced there’s a left back in him.

"Misplaced the odd pass"

Understatement of the year.

If we had started strong with Doku Nunes and Phil we might have been a couple up at half time. Our failure to lay a glove on them for 45 minutes was our downfall. After their goal it was almost inevitable we'd struggle as players tired. Phillips is really not at our level and should be shipped out in January.

Never really looked dangerous though, you can pass in front of a deep lying team all night and...they will let you as its their tactic
I’d pushback on that a little. We created quite a few good openings in the first half, it’s just the final ball and touch were heavy.

Is Jack still recovering from his bender after the treble…..?

Extremely disappointed when we lose.
Don't understand this half-arsed approach by Pep, either play kids and lose or play to win.
Lost to five minutes of bluster and shouting crowd.
Phillips didn't do many things wrong, but nobody replaces Rodri right now even for a game.
With Nunes and Doku on we were 300% better.
I know Jack has been injured, but don't see him regaining his place in the first eleven.
Jack struggled, offered nothing but he’s just back from injury, I do agree though that he’s going to struggle to get back in as it would appear he’s not got the output/ creative ability of Doku, Alvarez or Foden. Perhaps a move more central is his best option

I thought he was pretty decent in the first half.

That’s it, pretty decent for City is good enough for England.
He was fine tonight, but a pivot for us needs everything, he’s just a bit short.

For us, there’s just something not quite there. He’s not shite, he’s just not right for us. In my humble opinion.
