The other crazy thing about football is that contracts aren't guaranteed like in other sports. Albert Pujols just signed a $240 million contract with the Angels so they have to pay him even if they release him. Whereas in football, these guys sign contracts that sound astronomical but end up getting released two years into a five year deal so they don't get 60% of the contract.
Baseball is the last major sport w/o a cap here and it's seeing the players make tons more than in other sports. I think it's due to the players being subject to the reserve clause up until 1975. It basically made it impossible for players to become free agents and tied them to their team forever so they were constantly underpaid. But baseball has the same draft system so small-market teams can have success as well as the big spenders. It isn't as easy as in other sports but it does happen. The biggest spending team (Yankees) only have one championship since 2001.
