2 DMs might be better than one of course but that means leaving a more attacking player out. He may well be an improvement on Kovacic but our problems go much deeper than that.
Yeah but you said change the way we play. Having 2 DMs, including 1 who isn't blowing out his arse at 60 minutes, can enable us to play differently. We looked good against Chelsea in part because we dropped a midfielder between the CBs and pushed the FBs up. It's fine to do that and drop a forward player as our FBs create width & chances. Our problems are much deeper, but we can play differently with another DM in the squad

I've never seen him play pal, so unlike some on here I can't pretend to be excited by the lad. My point was more surely if we are buying him it's because the manager feels he can do and play how he wants his players to play. I'll have to take your word about his ability.
I guess the manager felt that way about Phillips too;-)

Some work out, some don't. If we sign him, I hope it works out but he certainly isn't going to fix all of our problems. No one DM is going to.

Indeed we can, and I hope we do.

Don’t even care if we get him. This guy won’t change anything. The problems are bigger than one person
This is fhe unfortunate truth..

Some of it is individual errors (exacerbated by the turgid slow buildups) some of it is intensity (the weak press,), some of it is lack of physical ability ( the aging players) and some is lack of talent ( the injured players)....

But most of all, its tactical, we are playing a brand of football that lends itself to easy counter attacks.

No one player can change that, but 3-4 exceptional players might.

I know we are all looking for hidden gems but fuck me this is Mancheater City F.C. 4 in a row title winners. Mctominay is tearing it up in Italy but its a whole different beast playing here. We should have ready made players targeted long before a transfer window opens. Stop fucking about!

He isn't a dm, it's like putting diesel in a petrol engine. He's actually been one of our best players this season and when he was missing for a few weeks it was a complete and utter shitshow
A goal here or there doesn't mean he's been one of our best players . Even if he played as a 8 he's out of position all the time . As a 6 it's criminal . Neglecting all responsibility and doing what he wants . Has the Saudi window shut ? Hopefully not .

He has not been one of our best players, he’s a huge reason we are dogshit in midfield. People need to stop making the excuse he isn’t a DM when he can’t even play a pass or move forward unless it’s against woeful opposition who don’t try to make a tackle.

Any decent side has made him look a fool on and off the ball.

I cant say that I have seen him play much in Porto, seen him a few times at Barca and Valencia and looked like a talent back then. But I would say it's a worrying sign that the club and Pep obviously know this player very well, he has an affordable release clause and have been available since the start of the window. Despite all this and us being absolutely desperate for a midfield signing it seems like we are waiting to the very last minute, when the season is more or less over, before trying to sign him. If we were convinced about his qualities he would probably have been here a month ago, the timing suggests thats this is more of the last resort.

If he signs I obviously hope it works out but the red flags are there.

Agree, he's a steady enough player but he certainly ain't a defensive midfielder.

The goals definitely mask his softness in midfield. Luxury player.

It’s worrying we’ve got 0 right backs, 1 left back (Ake) and 1 defensive mid who’s out for the season. Nunes will never be a right back. Akanji was good at right back back end of the treble but he’s having a horrendous season.

Not an upgrade on Kovacic ? He's been an absolute disgrace since playing as our DM .
Bet you weren't saying that midweek.

He's been far from a disgrace filling in at a position that isn't his own. Gonzalez might prove an upgrade but he won't make a huge difference if we continue to play the way we are doing.

Remember him at Barca as well, but felt he was more of a box to box CM, driving forward, think he even did the odd stint on the wing because of barca's many centre mids. Think he could do a job as a DM, but seems a bit of waste of his talent.

The reality of midweek was we were playing against a very average Belgian side. I'm guessing he will play well against Leyton Orient too. Doesn't mean he's good enough to play for us.

Playing against a side unbeaten in 20 (including tricky CL games). He's currently the best option we have at DM and I can assure you Gonzalez won't make a huge difference. Nobody will.
