Nicolas Otamendi - 2016/17 performances

Ota is strong in the air, can make an incisive pass, ok in the tackle. His biggest problems are a lack of pace and positional naivety. His rashness is a big problem although to be fair the way we defend with only about three players doesn't help.

Stones and Otamendi is the worst CB combination in recent City history.
gladly Bravo is not there. it could be a disaster & embarrassing night.

but i think Otamendi and Kolarov partnership is the best City CB duo this season.
there are much more stability at the back, especially when Willy in the goal.

This is the problem. Otamendi and Stones just doesn't work. It seems like they don't comunicate and they don't cover for each other. We need Kompany back and fit asap.

Have a read of either of the recent Pep books mate. Correct position on the field is a very large part of his method, he goes to the extent of drawing lines on the pitch like a chessboard so that he can coach players to adopt the right position given the stage of play. Otamendi can't or won't play the way Pep wants him to play and hold his position in an intellegent and disciplined way. If Vinnie were fit I don't think he would be getting a sniff. You are right in what you say about him making good individual challenges but a good defender needs a good all round game including positional intelligence. Sadly Ota has never had it and never will. Will be sold this summer.

Thanks for the response and the reminder on the books. Starting on Pep Confidential today. I'll bow out of this thread until I finish the book.

rumours madrid are monitoring his situation........SELL, SELL ,SELL ,SELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He is far too reckless and doesnt think enough to play the way Pep needs him to. You cannt fault his heart,,,,,he is good in the air but he is just far too reckless!

When he came on v Juve, Pogba booted the ball over his head & Juve scored. Last night, Monaco booted the ball over his head & scored.

He's been here a while now.

Dunney was asked whether he thought City's current cbs could be worked with or needed replacing, & was pushed further 'as a centre half' to clarify his opinion on Otamendi.

His conclusion was that he is harming John Stones' development & that Stones needs a better partner. He described Otamendi as 'a liability' who has no positional sense & no idea what is happening around him & just focusses on the ball.

I struggle to understand how anyone watching him for the past two years, can disagree with that assessment.

Yes, he puts in some good tackles, yes he CAN be good in the air SOMETIMES (if I knew how to do gifs I could make 200 showing examples of comedy aerial misjudgement), he is an aggressive front foot defender who was needed v Hudderfield for example, when others stood off. He has attributes.

Why are people not singing his praises about the good things he does & all the challenges he wins ?

Because he's a fucking centre back. If he wins 50 'tackles' & goes missing 5 times, it's the 5 times that we care about. There are defenders in non league football who would win the same tackles & headers.

The reason they don't play for City, is that they are not good enough.

pretty much agree with all of that

Dunne needs to wing his neck in,isnt he supposed to be part of the centre backs union, when do players from the same position attack other players like that
He should be pointing out how the lack of defence minded players means the centre backs get pulled into positions they don't want to be in all the time
It wasn't a good night for Oto,in some ways, but if he hadn't kicked Falcoa maybe he scores and the pen was saved
The 2nd goal was very poor but City have kept enough clean sheets with him in the side that he has some leeway when playing the highest scorers in Europe, hes entitled to enjoy his night and the result the same as the other players
