Would it be easier if you opened a Stats thread and you could talk to the cows on there with those that want to engage about them.

I love Ota and think he is our Best CH, but Stats bore the shit out of me :)
I think a Stats thread could be interesting, but if someone i s being criticised for their use of Stats in a players assessment on that players thread I don't think it unreasonable that they defend their use.

Agree, but its been done to death in this one thread and just eats up pages and pages repeating the same stuff.

Honestly I think a lot of the stats do have a meaning and reflect what I've been seeing; a defender who knows what he's doing and has been one of our best players this season.

Heading away unchallenged comes under clearances, of which he has made 121 in 16 games.

A defender being in contact with Aguero is them winning a duel..If Aguero is stood away then it's just a clearance.

A keeper can save a penalty, it bounces off the post hits them and goes in..They still saved that penalty .. Otamendi gets his head to the ball above his opponent, he's still won that duel. Maybe if he was about 7ft he could direct header to where he wanted every time, but there is body to body contact you can't win every one cleanly(he's not coming up against Aguero every week) just like you don't know where the ball is going to end up after a 50/50 tackle.

So if the forward only puts in a token challenge, such as Aguero does most of the time when the ball is in the air, which is effectively not a challenge, it still counts as a 'duel' which means it is a fairly loose statistic to start with.

And if you attempt to head everything you can cause as much trouble for your own team as helping, which imo is Otamendi at times.

These stats are defined and quite stringently so. Again, you just have to become knowledgeable about them.

I am going to assume you are just winding me up with that, as I think your grasp of football is better.

If people rely on stats rather than actual play, to enforce their argument then this is an unavoidable part of the thread as they can & do, just point to statistics to 'prove' any dissent is wrong rather than discussing actual incidents and techniques etc.

I actually tried not to get too much into it :)

Again, this is a red herring. Everyone who relies on stats also watch the games just as much as you do.

So they rely on watching, their opinion, and the stats. Simply put they just use more factors than you do.

They don't 'rely' on it in the place of actual play.

They use it to make out their opinion is more valid.

Today so far for instance. Otamendi has mainly played well but his passes have been one of Everton's best options & his playing onside of Lukaku cost us a goal.

His stats are probably brilliant.
