Nicolas Otamendi - 2016/17 performances

Pep says everybody is 'amaaaaazing' at everything. And he thinks Kolarov is also 'amaaaazing' in the air.

I don't know if you are another American & have to listen to Chuck Linkletter & Art Funkwit on commentary, but have a listen to people such as Martin Keown, on a typical Otamendi performance.

He does over use amazing.

I'm not sure if you're ignorant or just racist or maybe both.

For all the arguing about him being amazing in the air, not so much today.
Welbeck outmuscled him time and again on the deck too, he and Clichy were the weak links at the back today. He also did another of his headless chicken runs in the second half, trying to chase down the ball out wide near the halfway line and failing, leaving us a man short as Arsenal broke. Until he brings more consistency to his game I just can't see him as a regular starter.

Just sell this guy and bring the next guy in. Over it. People have had it out for him from the get go.

That's because from the get-go, it was clear to even unprofessional sportsman, that he was a liability and not good enough. Nearly 2 years on, that is still the case. I'd say it's an accurate judgement. That's not to say we haven't supported him, I've never booed or heckled etc at a match, but I've voiced my own honest opinion on his ability to defend for an aspiring top team on a forum.

Classic Europa League player for me.

He has those games where he lures you in with enchantment and you think wow, what a world beater, but then follows that performance up against a bottom half side and looks like he could struggle in the Championship.

Nowhere near consistent enough to be a consistent top class starting central defender.

You look at the likes of Otamendi and Mangala and it really does make you think how lucky we were to have Vinny as he was a few years ago, plus for only £6m too.

Around £70m for Otamendi and Mangala really is a frustrating City memory in recent years.

The facts don't support your opinion though. Just check any indicator. They all say you are wrong.

That's the point.

If only the game was played on a computer & the need for eyes & a brain could be taken out of the equation.
Its tiring to have this discussions where people pretend their eyes and brains saddled with all its biases somehow do a better job than a study of the relevant statistics.

Check individual stats he dwarfs everyone.
Check stats of games involved vs games not involved and the % of loses rises dramatically.

Check the quality of opposition played. You'd find that he played against the toughest and yet we won more and he was absent against the weaker teams and yet we won less in those games.

Simply put its undeniable that he is a net positive for the club. A greater net positive than any other defender since he has been here.

These are facts, not opinions, personal views or punditry. Just facts!

You don't have to agree with the facts. But that doesn't change them.

Surely by now they'd have created his own 'average time spent sliding on his hole per game' stat, I'd like to see that one.

What a howler on Sunday. Almost cost us the game.

Too inconsistent for me. World Class one game like Liverpool at home. And other times like Monaco at home I was praying for him to be subbed off, absolutely horrible that game. At least at Valencia he got a few goals, only scored once for us. He has regressed actually. I don't care what the stats say and how he's the best header of the ball. He should be sold this summer or if we can't sell him that he's a back up CB.

Absolutely no way will Otamendi be in our starting 11 next season. I'm sorry but he's not good enough. No one is safe from our back 5 except Stones. I wouldn't be surprised if we buy two CBs in the summer, (English CB like Keane or Gibson + someone like Bonucci or Laporte). Its time to finally get it right in the centerback department. We got Stones who will be world class now we need another.

Stones is also inconsistent, or doesn't that count? Ota may or may not be here next season, but he has been our best defender this season by far for me.

Doesn't say much really.

Stones is 22 and Otamendi is 29. I can accept inconsistency from a kid who hasn't even played European football before City and was pretty much playing one game a week. He has also massively improved for me since the beginning of the season.

If he stays I'm 100% sure he won't be a starter.

First it was Kolarov now it's Otamendi, I wonder who'll be our best defender this season next week when they catch a bit of flak.

Considering the work Pep did with Boateng and Mascherano, I'm surprised that Otamendi hasn't improved that much under Pep. I personally don't think Pep has coached any of our defenders that well, we've not seen an improvement from any of them to where they were last season.

Otamendi was brilliant at Valencia, but under Nuno I'd say they were far more organised, with better protection information of the back four. At City we're far too open, and it exposes him.

It's time to move on. The toxicity is too high. I'll never root against a city player....ever... but I hope the next guy does it for everyone. I suspect he might be treated differently regardless of results.

Just so everyone knows...the next guy we buy is locked in. We won't spend 30-60m again. Hope he does it for everyone.

Pep actually tried to improve him at the start of the season and even explicitly pointed to the evident bad habits during interviews, but later just gave up. This brainless clown is simply uncoachable. Pep makes mistakes, but is not a person to blame in this case.
Just get rid of him and forget like a nightmare. I personally feel more secure with Kolarov as CB, and it speaks volumes.

I'd say that's being "damned with faint praise" given the overall laxity of our defending.

If the ultimate aim is to win the CL then none of our current defenders are good enough in Pep's system to be regular starters. Stones is getting there and has the potential to succeed but the rest will never be more than backup players even if they survive the summer cull.
