Nicolas Otamendi - 2016/17 performances

My view on that is that he does for positional sense, but Ota still does the tackling & heading - which he excels at without help.
Ha! Didn't see this before responding to my good friend Escobar :p.

This I agree with. Our defense looked good yesterday and they both contributed. :)

I feel like Otamendi is too erratic when it comes to decision making. I feel that hurt us in both legs of the Champions League against Monaco. I feel alongside Kompany/Stones, a person like Bonucci or Aymeric Laporte won't be so rash it that area.Especially with Bonucci experience in the Champions League and a very defensive Serie A.

He was awful and that is my problem with Otamendi. For every good game there is a game like this one. And anyone with even a bit of pace absolutely rinses him cos he gets sucked into the ball all the time.

After looking composed the last few games next to Kompany, I had hoped he had turned a corner but he was back to his old dog with a balloon trick today.

I was just coming around to him, I really thought he'd turned a corner, he's been brilliant for the past month, but today....What's he doing for the first goal? If he stays in the defensive line it's a really simple attack to stop a defensive 3v2 with players tracking back quickly to help out.

The only way to make that attack dangerous is for Otamendi to run 30 yards out of the line make it a 2v2. After that it's a complete scramble.

For the second goal, he just falls asleep in the box.

After that it was just a shitshow, he can't deal with pace at all.

And it's a shame because with the ball he looked good. Put in a beautiful cross that should have been a goal, was brave in coming forward and did it well...but the mistakes cost us so much.

Have been saying this a while.

Too inconsistent to be a top CB. His performances vary from World Class to non-league. Needs to be sold in the summer.

Runs like he's struggling to run. Never seen that before in a player.

Just not suited to a high line defence.

Lol. Some of you have been in hibernation for a while. Been holding that "Otamendi sucks" scream in for a while haven't you?

He had an average game been outrun by the fastest guy in the league and a fresh leg off the bench.

So yeah lets deem him unfit after 5 stellar performances prior to the average one today.

Surely, a guy who is good in 5 of his 6 performances isn't good enough.

Thought Pep was the problem today, not Otamendi. Thank God they didn't start with the human dribbling machine. We'd have had more trouble.

Btw: So iS Kompany not making him play well anymore?

Nobody has been in hibernation, we've all just been waiting for the inevitable. Today it arrived. I just wish there was a middle ground with the guy, he's either excellent or absolute shit, be nice if he just had a few consistently normal performances.

Its a perception issue. People have convinced themselves he is bad, so when he has 6 straight great games, rather than viewing that as his norm, folks find every reason to undermine those performances. Either they pretend its a one time thing (I.e. "he was good today" even though it persisted for 2 months), and if that doesn't work, they ascribe his performance to the return of Kompany (even though he's been doing well for over a month before Kompany showed up).
And when he finally has an average they exclaim "he is simply not good enough!!" as if 2 below good games in 14 is somehow a bad thing.

Every player has a poor game whether iis 1 of every 5 or 6 or 7. But it seems Otamendi is the only one who is shit for bad games. Others just have bad games. Ota on the other hand is shit for being human.

He is a good defender. Like any defender he has a system that suits him. Us playing a high line or with 3 at the back doesn't suit him. In fact it makes him look shit as he is slow and has far too much ground to cover. When playing in a 4 more often than not he is very good. For instance he'd be great at Leicester or Spurs even. Chelsea not so much.
If pep wants to continue with himshigh line or 3 at the back the nico has to go.

He's world class and will look even more world class with world class fullbacks helping to defend and a world class keeper

Playing alongside Kolarov doesn't help matters also.
