Bloody hell got an alert and it was a 3 year old post, :) Yes suppose it depended what music you liked and Sounds always took it's rock / metal more seriously with Geoff Barton etc and other writers that went onto Kerrang and now appear in classic rock, so that matched my tastes.

Barton was the main reason I read Sounds; even met Geoff a few times: he interviewed my best friends' band; in fact, I even got quoted in the article although the comment was attributed to the band.

His sidekick in those days was often the photographer Ross Halfin and we got to know him quite well. He and another Sounds writer Pete Makowski were in the US when one of my friends from the band and I were on holiday there and they got us into a few gigs; primarily UFO, who they were on tour with.
