No fight in this team

There is an awful lot of people wanting to completely absolve the players of any blame, despite for some of them this isn't the first time they've all but downed tools. It's always easier to blame the manager, or the board, or the referees or whatever else you want, but at some point the players have to take a hell of a lot of responsibility as well. About half of the team we currently have were here and downed tools in Mancini's third full year and now the same problems are happening in Pellegrini's third year. Now I agree that Pellegrini seems to have lost his head to a large extent, but the players have to take responsibility as well, they are the constant between both very similar looking collapses of standards.

Can they simply not be motivated by managers after a certain amount of time? Do they constantly need new voices and new ideas to remain interested? I don't know, but the supposed "leaders" in our dressing room have let the standards of this club fall off a cliff for the second time under their watch now and it needs looking at.

Good post. Pretty much said the same thing regarding Kompany and other senior players, and was told I am one of the "worst city fans" for holding that opinion. Since that day when we first qualified for Champions League, most of the fans made up their minds that these senior players are exempt from criticism. Pretty much what happened to the fans of Pakistan cricket team after Wasim and Waqar. Their fans tolerated mediocrity for a long a period of time, no one questioned the performance of the seniors like; Afridi, simply because; 1) In that mediocrity- laden age they were still able to win few trophies.
2) Seniors were flat-track bullies who used tours against the minnows to bloat their averages.

Wholesale changes should have been made to the squad when Dortmund and Ajax ripped apart this so-called "core of world class players" in Champions League.

I didn't see a lack of effort today. Just a lack of quality and lack of a game plan. The quality issue is down to confidence, the game plan is down to the Manager, end of...

I've been saying this for months now, Pellegrini's plan is simply "Pass it about and hopefully something will happen" and we managed to get away with this due mainly to individual brilliance rather than adhering to a well thought out game plan. Now the individual brilliance has stopped, we've no chance.

This team isn't fit. Look at the teams who work the hardest in this league - Leicester Spurs - they work hard because they can because they're fitter than all the other teams.

Some of our players look knackered after 15 minutes.

Look at the injuries both of those teams have suffered. See a correlation?

Unfit players will pick up injuries!

Then is it any surprise this team has no fight? A manager's personality will come out in his team; our manager is a boring, old, dour man...now look at the way we play. Look at Wenger and Arsenal, look at Pochetino and Spurs, look at Howe and Bournemouth, look at Mourinho's teams, Ferguson at United...all teams play like their manager's personality...look at the way we play!

I think you are absolutely right with what you said there

Right then, have slept on this to try and calm down but can't hold back any longer. . .

I can't believe that a team (well squad) of players that are"internationals" can't motivate themselves for a derby ffs. Whose job is it to make them know what it means not just to the club but to us as fans. Too many are now playing for the money only. They need to realise, no champs league means less cash in fookin pocket

"we play for you" before the game video - yes right. Who they talking to - the car salesman or their agents.

This is going to be the first of a number of rants as I start to recover from yesterdays shambles.

blue moon classed as therapy

I agree with this. Did anyone see the build up for the Newcastle-Sunderland game, when Souness, Carragher, and Redknapp were on the pitch at the Etihad? Souness was talking about Newcastle's problems this season, and he highlighted the big problem as being the 'modern player', that players in the game now know that it will be the manager and the board that are going to take all the flack for a poor performance, and its much easier now for players to duck responsibility and down tools because they now that somebody else is going to get nearly all the blame. You could accuse Souness of generalising a little bit, but his point was pretty much spot on. Its been the problem at Newcastle, at Chelsea, with United when Moyes was in charge, and we're seeing it raise its ugly head again here.

I could find you some posts of mine from a season ago saying the same thing. There are some constants to this side deciding when it can be arsed playing and some blues just don't want to hear it. We had the talent on the pitch to win the league the last five on the bounce, and at least one of those comfortably. We've done it once on goal difference and another close call, both times under tricky last minute circumstances. This is why I'm not at all averse to getting rid of more of our supposed core, given they're the main constants in this steady stream of 'fight when we're arsed'. We need to build the side a new identity, and frankly we desperately need more high profile English players in the dressing room. The best domestic sides are always built around a strong national core, almost no exceptions. We've lost our way with this Barca lite shit.

Im going to have to turn up after kick off for the next game. If i see any of that #Together, "We Fight To The End" or "We Play For You" shit pre-match i think i will have a heart attack.
Im not even gutted we will finish out of the top 4, i consider ourselves lucky not to be in the bottom half. At least when we used to be proper shit it was half expected, now we dont really have an excuse.

Don't mind getting beat that happens in football. You win some you loose some.

What I don't like is when we get beat and there is clearly no effort or desire from the players or management.

I'm not saying the players didn't try yesterday when the stats show we were the more dominant side.

I just feel there is a was a lack of passion and desire from the players. In a game of that magnitude yesterday the one thing u must do is give it your all and then if you get beat so be it.

I expect the players don't like loosing but I know dam well if I was playing I would run my b***ocks off for the cause and I would know once I come off the pitch I have give it my all.

Don't like to feel like I'm slating the players or management but some of them need to take a hard look at themselves and ask have I performed to the best of my ability this season and give my all in every single game I've played.
