I'd say there were more inside Maine Road for the Charlton promotion game the following season, although the official figure was something like 48k the Kippax was absolutely heaving that day, Swales must have skimmed loads that day.
I watched Wigan v Warrington in a cup final of some sort at Maine Road, Kippax was a bloodbath, proper toe to toes going on all over the place, no idea what the gate was but it was a wild afternoon.
You're right. If I'd have sat I wouldn't have seen the game.doesn't mean to say he sat in them...... just like now!
Yes it was 68 WBA beat Liverpool in the quarterfinals then beat Everton in the final,Jeff Astle scored in every round.A WBA fan I know was telling me a while back about a 2nd replay between them and Liverpool in the FA Cup at Maine Road which they won 1-0. Think he said it was the year they won the Cup (1968).
There were two Rags v Liverpool semi-finals: 1979 (the first game, which was drawn, United winning the reply at Goodison) and 1985 (a replay, won by United, after a draw at Goodison).
In 1990, there were two Rags v Oldham semis (a 3-3 draw followed by a United win) and there was another one between those two sides, a replay in 1994 which United won after they equalised in the last minute in the first game at Wembley.
There was a Football League v Scottish League game in 1974, with the FL XI (who won 5-0, IIRC) including current City players Bell and Tueart plus ex-Blue Stan Bowles.
We also hosted some under-21 games in the late seventies (when Barnes and Owen were in the side, as was Corrigan as an over-age player at least once). And there was a UEFA under-21 championships semi-final against Scotland, IIRC, in about 1982. I remember Graeme Sharp playing for the Scots while Ranson, Reid and Caton were in the squad from us. I have a feeling that a certain Roberto Mancini once played in an under-21 international at Maine Road, too.
Do tell! There have been loads of non-City games and events at Maine Rd. I included most in my book Farewell To Maine Road. City even played an away game at Maine Road that wasn't against MUFC. The most significant non domestic game I found was the first ever World Cup qualifying match staged in England - Maine Rd was selected over Wembley! The most intriguing sports match was the tennis tournament held across the pitch in the 30s. Maine Rd deserved a bigger national send off than it got!
Would that away game at Maine Rd been against Newcastle in the Cup early 70s due to St James park being closed due to fan trouble,I was at the match we lost 2-0.There have been loads of non-City games and events at Maine Rd.
