Proper looking City performance.
Busy from the off, never let them out easy, one up within 10-15mins, and controlled the play all over the park.
What was remarkable to see was the difference a week makes, and the difference direct attacking play can create.
Jesus was superb on the right, as I think Torres would have been, and the ball inside the full back was on all day. We exploited that pass to brilliant effect and we could literally have been 5-0 up at HT.
Never did see the offside call replay from VAR, but will assume it was correct. However, that move helped show just how quick and clinical Torres can be in front of goal.
Great to see Laporte and Bernardo giving such a good contribution and, unless top top money is offered, I’d work hard to keep them both.
Thought Ederson was brilliant in the few moments he was needed.
Walker was his imperious best, both going forward and in his recovery runs.
Dias was Dias. Too bad he couldn’t get on a corner.
Laporte played very well and his cross field pass is an excellent weapon. Made up for him that he snagged a goal off his poor header coming back to him, and he took it well on his standing foot!
Cancelo played well down the left, with some excellent interchange play between himself and Grealish.
Bernardo was lively and showed why he can be such an important player for us.
Rodri was solid and had a crack or two from the edge of the box, which I like, because he has a cannon on him. Unfortunate not to get on a corner or two today.
Gundo is like a Swiss watch. Love him even more after watching Together! Just keeps us ticking over and always looking to change angles and exploit space.
Jesus was simply superb. Full of running and into dangerous positions. Playing him wide frees him up to be a player and he showed his quality today. Gutted he couldn’t grab a goal to round out an outstanding performance. MOTM all day long!
Torres was lively as ever, took his “goal” perfectly and showed that he, like Jesus, is a threat anywhere across the front line. As young as he is, he has the potential to be a City star.
Grealish had a good debut, albeit not as good as as the post-match media hype would suggest. Getting that first goal is a weight of the back. Showed glimpses of how well he is going to be driving into the box from the left. I think he’s going to be providing more than a few assists for KDB this season…and I think Kev might reciprocate!
Subs all gave good account of themselves, with Sterling getting himself into a great position AND staying onside for his goal, while the timing of Mahrez run, and the ball from Dias, we’re both sublime. However, they were both “out-sublimed” by Mahrez first touch (OMG) and shot (FFS, it was brilliant!).
Palmer was full of running, trying to take and create space and for a home PL debut, his 20 minutes showed he is ready to step up. While he’s a little more languid than some of the faster players, his ball control and ease on the ball suggests a player punching waaay above his age. He not only got into some dangerous positions with the ball, clipping a few in from the byline, but he was always in the creative mix in and around the left side of the box. He should sleep very soundly after that performance!
5-0, while a resounding win, flatters Norwich, as I think 7-0 or 8-0 was on the cards. However, it was nice to not only get a tidy win under our belts early doors, but to do it with Stones, KDB and Foden out of the team suggests there is so much more to come.
Lastly, I don’t expect Mahrez and Sterling to be on the bench for too many big games, but I hope they were paying attention to what Jesus and Grealish were able to accomplish by being more direct in their attacking, and not checking back inside every time.
It’ll be interesting to see what Arsenal team shows up tomorrow at the Emirates, because I think both Chelsea and us have the ability to absolutely batter them on current form, which might not be too good for Arteta!
The future is Blue!
