Ogbonna on City radar

By Football Italia staff

Manchester City are showing a significant interest in Torino defender Angelo Ogbonna, claims Tuttosport.

The Turin daily is suggesting that City boss Roberto Mancini has asked Attilio Lombardo, his assistant, to closely monitor the performances of the defender.

Ogbonna, 23, is a versatile central defender who can also be used as a full-back when required.

Although playing in Serie B, the stopper has been selected by Italy boss Cesare Prandelli during his reign as Azzurri CT.

The former Crotone man, who signed a new deal with Toro until 2016 last week, is valued at over €15m by Toro.

The Granata have claimed that they have rejected significant offers for the player in the past as they were contacted by Napoli, Benfica and Valencia.

Quick google search seems to indicate that Arsenal were once interested in him. Never seen him myself so dunno if he's any good. If he's decent at left back then we could probably ditch Kolarov and use him as back up to Clichy and Zaba if necessary

He's a bit like Vermaelen but taller, stronger and quicker. He's left footed best position CB but can play LB. He's the only Serie B player to be called up for the Italy national team. Hasn't really been tested yet so only great potential so far. Only 23 so has got time to develop but his price will be high because Torino value him so highly.

He is a Nigerian-Italian Leftback/Central defender. Not as aggressive as his size suggests. A left footed Savic. 15 million? No sir!

Don't let the fact that he plays in Serie B fool you into thinking he's a scrub. He has been with Torino his whole career baring a loan spell at Crotone before he had established himself. He has stayed with them in order to try and get them back to Serie A, loyalty should be looked upon as a positive. Having said that I don't know all that much about him, other than him being highly rated, and an Italian international. I think he's pretty quick tho, which would always be a bonus

That's not quite right, unless you mean this season? Plenty of Serie B players have been called up to the Azzurri. Massimo Maccarone being one, plus most of the Juve team when they were demoted.

Italy's defenders are not what they once were, in the past if you were just a squad defender you would have been world class, and whoever was out injured had a world class replacement. Since Nesta and Cannavaro there has been a lack of quality. Chiellini is the main man now, but he's nowhere near on the level of previous defenders. There has been much promise with Ranoocchia, Bonucci and Santon but all have stalled at bigger clubs. Not sure how Santon is doing at Newcastle, but the next Maldini tag has blighted him. Barzagli has probably been the best performing Italian defender this year, and I'd expect him to be partnering Chiellini at Euro 2012.

Ogbonna is highly rated, but he could be another Matteo Ferrari. Lots of promise, then a dive into mediocrity. Until he is regularly tested at a higher level it will be difficult to tell how good he is, and he is already 23. He does have pace, strength, and agression. Just not as much finesse and football brain as classic Italian defenders. He can improve, but I would not want to spend £20m plus when he has not been tested at a higher level. £10m and he is worth looking at, and could well develop into a phenomenal centre half.

Simone Benedetti is another strong player to look for in the future.

Both of tuscan stock, with a surname like that he is probably distantly related to me on my grandmothers side.

are you familiar with Tachtsidis from Verona? Heard he's getting Italian citizenship and one of the best midfielders in serie b this year.

this lad would be cracking for the prem, very strong on the ball. he's impressive, I hope we could get him on the cheap, though doubtful.
