Just watched a documental of Joy Division and also had a chat with me dad a few weeks ago, wit the state Manchester used to be.

Rusholme, Moss Side and Hulme in particular as that's where we're from.

But how many can remember how grim it used to be ? From the dystopian Bleak Brutalist nightmare of the Hulme Crescents
to the run down awful decaying grim Victorian mess that was Rushholme and Moss Side.

Any particular parts of Manchester stick in the mind as falling into that grim category, that you grew up in.

Any of those area's now totally different and pleasant ? any other parts gone the other way, as in down hill ?

I grew up in Moss Side for the first 10 years of my life (Claremont Road), and left it in 1982. Now it certainly wasn't Hale Barns or Prestbury, but I don't particularly remember it as being overbearingly grim. There was never a lot of money around, but I had a happy childhood. It seemed to turn nasty around the late seventies into the early eighties, which is a shame. There were/are lots of very good people in it, but the gangs seemed to take over pockets of the area, particularly down on the Alexandra Park estate on Princess Road.

You forgot the Underground Market. Probably wouldn't get a safety certificate now with the stiffer fire regulations.

Not about the gangs and crime, just grimness,

Grew up in Droylsden, used to love going exploring the old mills and buildings along the canal... especially the 'bomb factory' which I'm guessing used to be an old munitions factory where we used to acquire bullets and bigger shells occasionally.
