I don't even know what they call them these days or what's politically correct but i went to one on the weekend. Although it was clean and they're well looked after it was fecking depressing. Some deaf, hunched over a their zimmers, some being spoon fed etc. My mate who I went with to see his mum has dementia it was sad to see.

To think some have to sell their houses and blow their pensions on this. Anyone been to one or have family in one?

I hope I die before I start shitting myself because I don't want life going full circle

My wife's Dad has lived in Providence Villa (Warden/St.Clair) for around 25 years.
Fucking hate the place.

Great leveller. No matter how hard you work and how much you earn /save you are likely to end up in one of these surrendering every penny and your house. Meanwhile in the same place will be folk that have never done a days work in their lives getting it all for free.

Hopefully by the time I get into retirement age a bill will of been passed which legalises assisted suicide here in the UK.

I'd much rather overdose on Heroin or whatever than sit in some home, having my ass wiped whilst any remaining family ignore me as they can no longer be bothered to see my sad state.

Wonder how much it would be to set up something where if I get dementia or whatever I can be flown to Switzerland legally and have my life ended.
I'd buy that right now.

Fuck retirement homes.
No chance I'm staying in one

Some retirement homes are very nice indeed but they cost a fortune.

Most people end up ones run by exhausted and exploited minimum wage staff who have to do cleaning jobs too so they can pay the rent.

25 years ago i used to help a window cleaner and we used to clean windows on an old peoples home in Sale. We used to clean them inside as well as out - used to to take 2 days a month.

Still scars me to this day the day i saw a 98 year old women naked asking me who i was in her room.

Dirty bastards window cleaners.

My father-in-law was in one in Warrington for about three years before he died with Alzheimer's. He was well looked after in the main, though there were instances of neglect. The residents didn't really know much about their conditions or situations and everyone had frequent family visits.

The food was good, but some residents couldn't feed themselves, and there wasn't enough staff to look after all residents on a one-to-one basis. Without visitors, the residents would suffer a lot more.

The illness itself was the most depressing feature. The residents were at various stages of losing all their mental faculties. You could converse with some, and they would appear to be merely forgetful. Others could barely remember their own names. They were free to walk around the home, but they would urinate and defecate everywhere. All furniture was rubberised. Staff ran around cleaning up all the time. Food gets everywhere, and I found this to be quite disgusting. Some residents had quite violent tendencies, and despite their age and fragile state, they could generate a lot of force.

All in all, not a nice place to end your life.

I've been today to visit an elderly lady. It was very depressing. She went in for respite last week, and her nephew is now trying to pursuade her to stay! She's not happy at all. I also visit a lady who has dementia, nice home, costs over a thousand pounds a week, but it's like "one flew over the cuckoo's nest". She says they are all gaga in there, and she's not wrong!

If my family all die in order then i will have no family to look after me,i trust myself to shuffle off before i end up in one though

In the main I think that nursing homes are generally quiet good. There are instances, which we have all seen in the press, where people are deliberately mistreated but as I say in the main they provide a good option for people in the later years of their lives. I think many complaints about nursing homes come from families with unrealistic expectations and decide because Aunty Agnes has had to wait 10 minutes to be changed they decide its neglect.

Would never put a relative in a home, care can be given in the community in their own home although this has limited use due to severe dementia etc.

The funding is very poor but I think the NHS are just starting to realise that Social Care can save them a lot of money, preventing bed blocks etc.Up until now the NHS has had all the money with Social Care neglected.

Check ratings of care (given by the regulator the Care Quality Commission)on their website at the very least.

I'm going to get myself Cryogenically frozen and get revived in 1000 years when they can bring you back to life, cure whatever it was you suffered from and restore my boyish good looks.

The option is to be looked after by family.
This is what happened to my dad. It meant huge self sacrifice for my sister and her husband. The rest of us helped as and when we could. My dad died at home, where he wanted to be.
