Sorry for (maybe) some mistakes, it is a translation of a german article, when he was loaned from Wolfsburg to St Pauli (he was 21), he has improved in all areas since then.
The fact that Marmoush can not only play as a centre-forward but also on the attacking right flank was certainly a decisive factor in his signing. We introduce Omar Marmoush in more detail:
Omar Marmoush, born in Cairo, made it onto the pitch for Wadi Degla FC in the Egyptian Premier League in 2016, when he was just 17 years old. Marmoush was also an integral part of the team the following season. This was followed by a move to VfL Wolfsburg for the 17/18 season, where Marmoush played for both the U23s and the senior team. Incidentally, he made his first appearance for Wolfsburg in September 2017 against FC St. Pauli's U23s.
After a mixed 18/19 season, he made a breakthrough of sorts last season with 9 goals from 11 games for the U23s (he also scored against FCSP). Marmoush was a regular centre-forward shortly before the Corona-related interruption of the Regionalliga Nord.
As a reward for his good performances, Omar Marmoush was a permanent member of VfL Wolfsburg's professional squad at the end of last season and featured in a total of six games (including on the right flank). In the current season, however, he has only played a single minute in the Bundesliga. Marmoush oscillated between a place on the bench in the Bundesliga, little playing time in the cup and a little more in the regional league.
As a result of last season, he extended his contract in Wolfsburg until 2023, despite interest from other clubs. A planned loan, for example SpVgg Greuther Fürth is said to have been interested, did not materialise for the time being as Marmoush wanted to become a regular player at VfL. Now, with the move to the FCSP, the turnaround in his career plans has finally materialised.
Hey Normen, hey Daniel FC St. Pauli are loaning Omar Marmoush from VfL Wolfsburg. Does the move suit you?
Normen:
Given the circumstances, that Omar was hardly ever used, it makes sense to loan him out. However, we don't quite agree on whether the move into the relegation battle could be beneficial for such a young talent. For his character development in any case.
Dennis:
From my point of view, it's a very good fit, especially for us, because hopefully the move to Hamburg will give him more match practice. It's quite full at our club, especially in his area, so he doesn't get enough playing time. Many fans also regret that because we are curious about him and would like to see more of him. He's freeing up a place in the squad here and can prove himself with you - and I have the impression that he won't go about it half-heartedly or with a ‘well, okay’. He'll give it his all and try to help where he can.
So far this season, Marmoush has only played a single minute in the 1st division. Why has he played so little?
Dennis:
As I said: competition. You just have to realise that he's a bit lost between Weghorst, Ginczeck and Bialek in the forward line, which is less due to his class than to his physicality (at least that's how I interpreted it). In the test match against Hannover, he played more behind the front line or on the right wing, which he can also do, but even there he has a long way to go in the first eleven. Last season he was allowed to play a little more, even if only for short spells, but you could see that there was talent there. With Bialek, however, someone has been signed who fills exactly this position and on whom the hopes of the striker rest a little. That makes it even harder for him to get in.
Normen:
Actually, one of VfL Wolfsburg's new goals is to focus more on younger players and talents. But Omar has a hard time in the forwards because there are still a few players ahead of him at the moment. Wout Weghorst is the undisputed No. 1, who always plays when he is fit. Behind him, Daniel Ginczek also always has the right to play. With our one-striker system, there are hardly any opportunities for talented players to show themselves. And VfL bought another great striker talent from Poland in the summer, Bartosz Bialek. Omar would have had to excel in his few appearances to stand a chance against this competition.
What are Omar Marmoush's strengths?
Standards:
Omar can be used in several positions in the offence. He has a hard, well-placed shot and is also technically quite good. Omar is not afraid of the 1:1 and likes to dribble.
Dennis:
I'm not so sure about that, to be honest. Unfortunately, for well-known reasons, I didn't see him play that often, but what I remember was that he was a technically good and hard-working player who could also do something with the ball.
And where can he still improve?
Dennis:
In the test, I had the feeling that he wanted to recommend himself a little too urgently, which meant that he often lost the ball easily, which was similar last season in the European Cup. He needs to get better at making decisions, but I think we can manage that well. Above all, it will help if he gets the kind of games you hope he'll get.
FC St. Pauli urgently need reinforcements on the attacking right flank, also due to injuries. Can Omar Marmoush play this position?
Normen:
Absolutely. Omar can also play on the wing. In the second half of the 19/20 season, when he was used more often by the professionals than this season, he was brought on twice in the attack and three times as a right winger in five substitute appearances.
Dennis:
Yes, he can do that. He already looked good in the test when he was able to keep up well in a very mixed team. He also did well in the cup (although I have him in mind at least once on the left wing... But left or right, the Kaiser knows that's possible). I saw him as a flexible player who can hopefully help you in several positions.
What kind of person is Omar Marmoush? Any stories we should know about him off the pitch?
Dennis:
I don't know too much about that either. He's ambitious - before the season he said that he wanted to be a regular player by the end of the season, which is why he turned down a loan to Linz. That could benefit you now, I can really see him helping you. Treat him well, we'd love to have him back as a second division top scorer!
Thanks for the insight, Normen and Dennis!
With Omar Marmoush, FC St. Pauli are getting a player who has already collected minutes in the Bundesliga with a top team, but was unable to make a lasting impression there. This loan, which all sides hope will give him plenty of playing time, is intended to change that.
So far, Omar Marmoush has spent almost his entire career as a supplementary player rather than a regular. It remains to be seen whether he can establish himself as a regular at FC St. Pauli, his first station in the 2nd division. There is certainly a need in the attacking area, at best on the right flank.
