according to a story in the paper today , UB40 were started with the £4000 compensation lead singer Ali Campbell got after losing an eye in a bar fight 30 years ago - is this true ? cant believe i've never heard that story before

Does seem a bit of a tall story , although wikipedia , and other sites , have been saying this about UB40 for ages ....... about how they used 17 year old Campbells £4000 compensation money to pay for their very first instruments.
Maybe it is true ... they were probably just boisterous youths in the late seventies just struggling to get their big break , and it's not beyond imagination that one of em' could have been involved in a fight at some stage for this to have happened.
Andl they could hardly have had a lot of other money back then seein' as they named themselves after an unemployment benefit form that they sure appeared pretty familiar with!
