Opta stats of City' season to date with a Liverpool benchmark taken from the Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2018/oct/06/pep-guardiola-attack-liverpool-manchester-city

Confirms for me a slight weakness in finishing - something to work on.

Level on points but overall the stats reveal City the differences.

Think I read elsewhere the dippers have covered more distance than us. Hopefully will have ran themselves into the ground by February. Their preseason was geared towards hitting the ground running.

Chances created tells me City will get something today, need to be clinical and Aguero has to turn up at Anfield as it’s never a place he has a good game.

Rings true but come the crucial phase of the season it might become a weakness. A side based on physicality is more exposed to the effects of a long season.

Only three stats really matter
Points
Goals scored
Goals against
They are the most important but then if that's all you consider then last week you must have concluded that Liverpool were better than City. At the end of the season you are right, but 7 games in they can reveal a sides strengths and weaknesses.

Stats also reveal aspects of the performance that are otherwise subject to subjective argument.

The main reason I posted it was because about a fortnight or so ago I made a point that City's finishing could be better and others referred to City's goals scored. These stats do suggest some weakness in finishing

All these stats are of course a good indication regarding the performance but it will never show the real picture. If you analyze carefully, we aren't at the same level like we were last season in terms of fluidity of the players movement, passing sequences etc.

Two points regarding those stats. We never play with 2 natural goalscorers and sometimes we don't play with any, our emphasis is on creating chances by playing an array of attacking midfielders and wingers and overwhelm defenses. We will likely create far the most chances but our conversion rate will suffer. Not even sure Jesus is a natural goalscorer.

Secondly, no KDB in those figures.

Our conversion rate (all attempts) in the record breaking season last year was 15.96% and this year, as per the stats you quoted is 12.50% So, yes there is an argument that our finishing is weaker.

However, we are averaging far more attempts per game than we did last season - currently 24 per game compared to 17.47 per game last season. So, with the lower conversion rate but applied to a higher number of shots, we are still scoring more per game (just) than we did last season. Ultimately that is the most important.

We haven't played the best of opposition yet so that could explain the high number of chances. On the other hand we've been without our best player.
