Our attack - what's off?

I also wonder whether its a simple case of not playing what is imho our strongest XI.

Whenever a team plays in a certain system like Pep's or Klopp's, it is imperative that we know what our strongest XI is for OUR system.

2018:

Sane------------Aguero-------Sterling

-------D Silva------------KDB----------

-------------------Ferna-----------------

Mendy---Laporte---Kompany---Walker

-----------------Ederson-------------------

We knew that if it not for injuries, this would be the best team on the pitch.

Fast forward to today, we had all players necessary to play with width to stretch the opposition with our wingers yet we decided to play an out of form Mahrez and Bernardo over Sterling and Foden.

Had this XI started:

Torres------------Jesus-------Sterling

-------Foden---------------KDB-------

--------------------Rodri----------------

Cancelo----Laporte---Dias----Walker

------------------Ederson---------------

I wonder if we would've been able to penetrate the opposition, get the first goal and then they would've had to come out. Football relies on really thin margins and whether you admit it Mourinho only came in with a Plan A of parking the bus and capitalising on our mistakes. Had we scored first or even equalised, they would've come out leaving gaps for Kev and Foden to exploit through.

As it stands Mahrez is not a system player for our team. Not unless Cancelo is playing RWB and Mendy playing LWB. Till then, Mahrez is useless on the wings. So why play him? Okay Raz is injured but Foden was brimming with confidence and form mid week, why not start him?

It's the most simple most basic things which leave me completely baffled with Guardiola. We can see it, so then why can't he? In any case, let's hope we go on a good run of form till Christmas, see our position in the table and analyse and play accordingly.

This season is up for grabs for anyone. Frankly we should be doing much better, Leeds and West Ham were must 3 points. This was supposed to be a minimum 1 point. We need to get our shit together and quickly. I just hope its not one of those seasons in which we look back in the future and think had it not been for certain decisions, we would've steamed through this.

Worth adding that my point wasn't that some of those players aren't good. They are. They're just not as effective in the same way as the previous incumbents i don't think.

That is a fair point. However, it is worth adding that Sane couldn't get into the team properly in his first few months at City. Torres is already, Foden could become the player Silva was and Jesus is still 24.

The problem is nobody is ready now, but signings have to be judged on a longer base than a few months. This isn't a pop at you mate, I just think we can judge the likes of Torres in a couple of years.

Maybe the team need to sit down and watch the formidables dvd and remind themselves how they used to play. Yes it looked very tactical and complicated but we made it look easy. 3-4 passes and we would score a simple tap in.

We used to have a v8 under the hood. Now we have a horse and cart. I want the v8 back.

Take us back to this... we made football look so simple

In fairness, watching that highlights again, West Ham got the very same counter attacking chances we now pretend didn't happen then. The only difference is they failed to score. Eddie blocked one, and they hit the bar on the other.

I guess we also need more luck I addition to a much more assertive attack

The type of goals we scored was most interesting because they seem to have gone from our game completely

We won't do it though. We're not a club that takes drastic steps like selling Sterling or Rodri. We'll hold onto them until they have no market value.
