Considering Arsenals result the other night and United last night its quite clear that the standard of european football is not at its strongest at the moment. This is supported by the fact that English clubs who have qualified for the Champions league of late (with the exception of liverpool this year) have generally reached the latter stages of the chapions league.

I like to think I am a realistic blue but considering our results against the top four this year and the type of players we have in the first team squad, players such as Tevez, Adebayor, De jong, Given and four regulars in the England squad , im sure we would be able to compete comfortably with some of the sides in the last 16 of the Champs league.

To me although we are having some teething problems it tells me that the progress over the last couple of years has been incredible, and it wasn't due to competing with some of the sides in our domestic league our rapid progress would of been more evident to some observers.

I do worry what our group would be like with us not having qualified for it in years. I imagine we'd be unseeded, so we could potentially end up in a group similar to this:

Real Madrid
Juventus
Hamburg
City

:s

Hamburg were pretty good last season, although as usual our shockingn our away form. Not watched much of Juventus but is it the name that suggests it would be a tough game or the actual standard of the opposition.

To be honest, I wouldn't care what group we were in. It would be the impression we made which would have a lasting effect. We usually pull our socks up for the big games.

IF we do get 4th, getting players which are required will be a damn site easier!

Went to the barca match in August. It just didnt feel right watching city win there and Dunne lifting the Joan Gamper trophy in front of 95000. Sure I could get use to it though ;-)

If Juve qualify. I think there 6th in their league at the moment. If Milan are 2nd, what does this say about Juventus or teams like them.

I would be more confident in games against those three than I would be against Stoke, Hull and Bolton!

the problem would be actually getting in the group stages we would be unseeded in the 2 qualifying draws and you just no that twat plantini would be fixing the draw to give us the hardest possible a tought russian trip or roma or a mad turkish team but saying that IF we finish fourth the checkbook is going to take one hell of a battering

dont get me excited about the chapions league. my dream is to be on the beach drinkin beer before a major euro away game. come on cityyyyyy warghhhhhhhhh.

Have posted the above link before, but fits in nicely with this thread. It's a quality, if stat-tastic site, listing all the national association leagues by their UEFA coefficients, as well as the rankings of individual teams for seeding purposes. It also outlines the format of the Champs League and Europa League, with respect to which national associations get which places in each competition, and at what stage respective teams enter into the qualifying rounds of each competition.

Because the rankings are based on an individual teams performance over a number of years (it's very complicated), Manchester City are currently ranked =63rd alongside Newcastle. Middlesboro are ranked 54th and Bolton 51st.
