I blame Vinny for this. His post match comments really bugged me. Yeah the ref was crap so what else is new. Yeah City fans were not allowed in but hey its not exactly done us the world of good when the fans did schlep up.
I also blame Tevez. Well not so much blame but I do recall his comments on the CL and the unbelievable pressure to do well. And that pressure is the issue. After 4 seasons, the seemingly uncomfortable truth is the players can't hack it when it comes to the CL. So ok playing a formation that a 38 y/o Totti can waltz through unimpeded doesn't help nor seeing Bayern stuff the aforementioned dancing Italians 7-1 and clearly we are not preparing for these games in a way that makes a difference so two coaching regimes need to have a long look at themselves. But no matter how you cut it the CL for us is like a virus that makes previously good players visibly deteriorate before our very eyes.
At the first hint of pressure, adversity, or a 38 y/o Italian strolling through our midfield, we collapse like a Masterchef soufflé. This was the PL we would woman slap these teams into submission 9 times out of 10 but as soon as that fucking awful music starts we piss down our legs.
It was away to Real Madrid that did for us. We should have won that fucker and that would have been our moment. But we didn't. We tossed the game into the crapper and we have been tossing them into the crapper ever since.
Something or someone has to convince the players and the club that they can compete in the Champions League. And when they have convinced them they can compete we can then start to win matches and actually look like we belong because right now we have our grubby noses pressed against the window pane looking in on everyone else enjoying the party inside.
So the question is. How the hell do we instil the mentality necessary to actually compete in the Champions League?
