That's not quite true.
It means it has been sent but not reached its destination yet. Basically after you've sent it it should appear in your outbox for a few seconds, then go to your sent messages folder. Or if, for some reason, the message sending failed, it will stay in your outbox, so if it does that you'll probably have to send it again, if that makes sense.
Unless there is a bigger phone geek out there who can correct me, but thats how it works on my phone anyway!

Its all to do with servers, innit? If it has left your outbox, but not in your sent items its not actually left the server that provides you. Or am I wrong as usual?
