My girlfriend left her job in October and got her payed into her bank, as usual.
Now we have had a letter off her previous employer, saying that they had
payed her too much. Apparently they should have deducted some days holidays,
that she had taken but not accrued for the year. They say we have to pay it by 23rd December
or they will put it to their recovery agents.

Anyone know where we stand on this, as it's a bloody awkward time to be sending demands.

It's 'got her pay paid into her bank'.
If she has been overpaid incorrectly, it's not hers to keep.
I've worked at large companies who have carried on paying many ex-employees for months because HR or the manager didn't understand the IT system requirements.

Edit: Offer to pay it next month when it's easier

They are entitled to it back, like HMRC any mistake is the employees fault. However, if its a small amount i.e. a couple of hundred quid try bluffing them out. Chances are they will write it off if we're talking thousands cut a deal at £xx month.

Cheers. They'll have to wait till New year.

How would it work in terms of tax?

You don't want money you've had to pay back counting as part of your allowance.
