An interesting and pertinent article by Gershon Baskin, one of the leading, if not the leading, Jewish peace activist. No one could accuse Baskin of being an Israeli apologist or propogandist.

I spent hours this week trying to convince my main Hamas contact to speak to his leaders to call for an immediate, unconditional, 24-hour ceasefire in order to stop the escalation. My message made it all the way up to Khaled Mashal, Hamas's leader. I wanted to help prevent the inevitable deaths of innocent people and the destruction that this war would cause.

I tried to impress upon him the seriousness of Israel's preparations for a ground attack, including the fact that it has called up 40,000 reserve soldiers. I tried to appeal to his sensibilities regarding the unnecessary deaths of so many innocent people. I am quite sure, having known him for eight years, that he agreed with me.

The Hamas leadership decided to ignore the possibility of a ceasefire and instead challenged Israel to "bring on" the battle. These irresponsible leaders are criminals to their own people.

I can honestly say that Benjamin Netanyahu did not want to escalate this war. It is so unfortunate that Hamas leaders, some sitting in hotels abroad and others safely hiding underground in Gaza, put the innocent people of Gaza in the direct line of fire.

Force alone will never be a proper response to human suffering. Israel had to respond with force, I am sorry to say, but Israel must also present a plan for addressing the real and urgent human needs of the 1.7 million people in Gaza, or this ongoing war will never end.

To all of my Palestinian friends and others on the left: Instead of empty words, how about explaining what you would do if you were Israeli prime minister facing hundreds of rockets falling down on your citizens? Would you surrender to Hamas and say, please shoot us, it's ok, we understand your anger? Is that what you would do?

Get real! How about proposing something constructive? That is what I have tried to do. Where is your constructive and logical contribution to the discussion? I don't need to hear empty condemnations with no positive suggestions.

To all the right-wing people who have nothing constructive to say: Your criticisms and words of hate do not help anyone and are not welcome.

I am tired of these conversations of hate. Say something constructive.

The core of the problem is and has always been that the key players on both sides have little or nothing constructive to say, preferring to use violence to advance their respective agendas.

Interesting, informative and not biased article as both sides get told.

Watched a decent debate on Al Jazeera this morning. Experts from both sides of the argument with a host keeping it ticking over and allowing them their say. However, eventually they did start going round in circles.... Hamas' fault countered with stop killing Palestinians. Then a couple of petty insults.....

..... It was like reading Bluemoon.

When Hamas kidnapped and murdered 3 Israeli boys, how did they think Israel would respond?
And now, for some reason the world condemns Israel.
Would you react to someone kidnapping and murdering your child?

If some French people did kidnap and murder my niece I wouldn't expect Cameron to start bombing France though. Is it actually confirmed that Hamas did murder those poor boys?

Anyhow Israel bombing Palestine, Hamas bombing Israel it could go on for fucking ever. Even the experts (from both sides) I mentioned in my previous post, who'll know far more than anyone on Bluemoon regards the fucked up situation, couldn't come up with a viable solution.

I'm out.

If I randomly bombarded the country where the murderer came from, killing hundreds of people, then I expect I'd receive seom negative feedback on my response. I'd personally probably make efforts to find the individual/s responsible, instead of just punishing everyone who happens to live near them, but that's just me.

The airstrikes have only a limited connection to these kidnaps/murders. These kidnappings of course escalated tensions again, and perhaps it goes further back and the kidnappings were in response to the murder of two Palestinian teenagers by the IDF in April. However, it's what's happened since then. Israel went and raided over 1,200 homes and refugee camps trying to find the three kidnap victims. Seven Palestinians were shot dead including a child, and two elderly Palestinians died of heart attacks during raids on their homes. There were also a few airstrikes in Gaza which although seemed mostly to have killed Hamas members has had the effect of pissing them off a bit - especially when they deny all involvement (when the usual modus operandi with terrorist groups is to admit everything even when they didn't do it). Hamas of course retaliated with rocket attacks, and then Israel responded for that. It's very hard to trace it back to a specific point, especially when we don't know who initiated the kidnappings or why. However, the fact is that tension has been ratcheted up and it's foolish simply to draw a line from point A (Israelis kidnapped) to point B (bombings of Gaza). Ironically, there are a number of posters who seem to think bombing Gaza is ok to get revenge for the three murdered Israelis. Here's a thought, an alternative to bombing the shit out of Gaza when the kidnappings took place on the opposite side of Israel in the occupied West Bank: try tracking them down and arresting them through police work... You know, like how most murderers are caught, convicted and sentenced. Some people on this thread are so fucking daft that if someone from Switzerland kidnapped three French people they'd bomb Belgium.

Israel are not bombing Gaza because of the kidnapping and murders. It's because Hamas are firing hundreds of rockets at Israel.

Straight from a Palestinian's mouth. Is this the unbiased source you wanted?
