Paris 2024 Olympics Thread - 11th August (pg 430)

I used to know all our Athletes and they were like Heroes when I was a kid, Cram, Thompson, Elliot, Jackson, Edwards, Christie, Backley and probably more I’ve not mentioned
Don’t think I could name a member of our squad now. Well Tom Daley but no track and field, who are our best shots at T&F medals ?

GB Schedule
2nd August

Another brilliant day of sport, there should be more medals, wish I’d booked the day off. We should have our eyes on gold in the Lightweight Double Sculls, Imogen Grant and Emily Craig look a class apart. The athletics starts properly, look out for the 1500m in the morning, 3 heats, all 3 absolutely stacked with talent, there may be a few casualties given the size of the fields. Look out for Emma Wilson in the windsurfing, she’s absolutely dominated the field, she’s the only sailor to automatically qualify for the final. Keely Hodgkinson starts her bid for gold in the 800m, Jemma Reekie and Phoebe Gill are running fast as well. Beth Shriever is the BMX racing too, she’s dominated her field in the quarterfinals, I hope she gets the gold.

Women's 800m
Keely Hodgkinson - Outright favourite for Gold, local girl, 5th fastest in history (might be the fastest legally).
Jemma Reekie - Should be looking to get silver behind Keely.
Phoebe Gill - 17 years old, ran 1:57 this year, one of the fastest in the world. A medal would probably be a long shot.

Men's 1500m
Josh Kerr - Current 1500m World Champion - He and Ingebritsen will be scrapping for Gold.

Men's 400m
Matt Hudson-Smith - Set the British record a couple of weeks ago, fastest in the world this year. Might be the favourite now.

Women's 1500m
Laura Muir - Outside chance of a medal, ran some fast times this year but the rest of the field has caught up. No chance of gold though.

Women's Pole Vault
Molly Caudery - A fan favourite one might say. I think she has the highest vault in the world this year, slightly inconsistent of late but could win no medal or could win gold.

Women's Heptathlon
Katarina Johnson-Thompson - Current world champion, this is the one she's missing.

Women's Sprints
Should pick up a relay medal.
Neita or Asher-Smith have an outside shot of a medal in the 100m, its the weakest it's been for a while bar 1 or 2 sprinters.

Off of the top of my head, I may have missed 1 or 2.

Think the Algerian has been a victim of social media jumping all over something. I thought it was a Fallon Fox situation (male to female transgender MMA fighter who was brutalising women). Her being born with features of both genders is much more of a grey area and not really her fault.
I’m not sure anyone is saying it’s the Algerian’s fault or they are to blame; I’m certainly not.
But it can still be unfair at the same time.
Too many folk misinterpreted this as assuming it was a trans story. It’s DSD, but still not right what the IOC have done (but also not the individual athletes fault at all).

I also don’t think it’s a grey area as a boxer. You don’t fight with your genitalia.

Very much appreciated thanks

Got a fair few decent shouts there
I was wrong seeing their names I have heard of Asher-Smith & Johnson-Thompson

A couple of other outside shots. Both relative youngsters, ginger and improving rapidly.
Ben Pattison in the 800 M. Only Coe has run faster as a Brit. A real confident lad with fight.
Charlie Dobson 400 m. Now second behind Hudson Smith in GB all time list.
